Tunisia Travel Boom Accelerates as TUI Launches New Gatwick–Djerba Flights for Summer 2027

Tunisia is positioned for stronger British visitor demand after TUI announced new charter flights between London Gatwick and Djerba for summer 2027.

TUI Airways will operate the service twice weekly, with departures scheduled every Monday and Friday. The approximately three-hour-and-15-minute journey will provide holidaymakers with direct access to the popular island off Tunisia’s south-eastern coast.

Packages are being offered from £659, creating another competitively priced option for British travellers seeking sunshine, beaches and cultural experiences outside traditional European holiday destinations.

The new service will strengthen Djerba’s position within TUI’s North African programme. It also gives families, couples and groups more flexibility when planning one-week, ten-night or two-week holidays.

Flights combined with accommodation and transfers can simplify the booking process. This convenience could appeal particularly to value-conscious travellers concerned about rising holiday expenses.

Djerba gains a direct British gateway

The Gatwick connection represents a significant accessibility improvement for Djerba’s tourism market.

London Gatwick is one of the United Kingdom’s most important leisure aviation hubs. Direct charter capacity can help the island compete more effectively with Mediterranean destinations already supported by extensive British flight networks.

The Monday and Friday schedule also allows travellers to select different holiday durations. Meanwhile, tourism businesses in Djerba could benefit from more predictable guest arrivals throughout the summer season.

Hotels, restaurants, guides, transport companies and excursion providers stand to gain when additional airline capacity converts into overnight stays and visitor spending.

The service also supports Tunisia’s wider position as an affordable sunshine destination. All-inclusive resorts, short flying times and a broad accommodation market make the country attractive to travellers balancing experience with cost.

Island combines beaches with heritage

Djerba offers more than a conventional resort holiday. Its coastline, palm-filled landscapes, traditional settlements and local markets create opportunities for both relaxation and exploration.

The island’s distinctive settlement pattern joined the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2023. It reflects how communities adapted to a semi-arid environment and long-standing water scarcity.

A network of dispersed neighbourhoods, homesteads, religious buildings and trading centres developed across the island from around the ninth century. This heritage gives visitors an insight into Djerba’s cultural diversity and relationship with its environment.

Houmt Souk provides a lively introduction to island life through its markets, cafés, crafts and traditional architecture. Visitors can combine shopping and dining with walks through historic streets.

Djerbahood adds a contemporary cultural dimension. Its extensive street-art collection has transformed the village of Erriadh into an open-air attraction featuring creative work from international and Tunisian artists.

Local seafood, Tunisian dishes and neighbourhood cafés further expand the visitor experience beyond resort dining.

Film tourism adds desert appeal

Djerba can also serve as a starting point for excursions into southern Tunisia.

Desert landscapes, cave settlements and locations associated with the Star Wars films attract screen-tourism enthusiasts. Selected excursions are available from approximately £66 per person, while other cultural experiences begin at around £33.

These activities can distribute visitor spending beyond beachfront resorts. Local drivers, guides, restaurants, craftspeople and attraction operators may all benefit when holidaymakers explore the wider region.

However, travellers should confirm what each excursion includes before booking. Journey duration, meals, admission charges and physical requirements can differ between programmes.

The combination of island beaches and inland experiences gives Djerba a useful advantage. Visitors can enjoy resort facilities while adding heritage, food, art or desert adventures to the same holiday.

Resorts target different traveller groups

TUI’s programme includes accommodation designed for contrasting holiday preferences.

TUI BLUE Palm Beach Palace offers an adults-focused beachfront experience. Its positioning should appeal to couples and travellers prioritising comfort, relaxation and direct coastal access.

TUI MAGIC LIFE Penelope Beach provides an all-inclusive alternative for families and active guests. Sports, entertainment, food and drinks within one resort can make budgeting more predictable.

This variety matters as demand becomes increasingly segmented. Some visitors want quiet wellness-focused stays, while others prioritise activities, children’s facilities and organised entertainment.

A broader resort choice can help Djerba serve multiple markets without depending on one type of holidaymaker.

Tunisia strengthens value-led tourism

The new route arrives as household budgets continue influencing international travel decisions. Travellers increasingly compare package prices, baggage allowances, transfers and meal plans before choosing a destination.

Tunisia can compete through warm weather, all-inclusive accommodation and relatively short flights from Britain. Djerba adds the appeal of an island setting without requiring a long-haul journey.

The destination may also attract returning Tunisia visitors seeking an alternative to the country’s established mainland resorts.

No official forecast has quantified how many additional British visitors the Gatwick service will generate. Nevertheless, twice-weekly capacity gives hotels and tourism operators an opportunity to build stronger summer demand.

TUI’s summer 2027 expansion places Djerba within easier reach of the UK market. If competitive pricing and direct connectivity translate into bookings, the island could become one of Tunisia’s most closely watched emerging package-holiday destinations.
