Argentine environmental and park authorities executed a precautionary safety shutdown at the world-renowned Iguazu Falls, temporarily restricting public access across the iconic natural reserve. The brief closure was prompted by intense rainfall linked to the active El Nino climate pattern, which triggered rapid water level increases along the Iguazu River and threatened tourist footbridges.
Park administrators instituted the safety protocols when hydrological monitoring stations detected river discharge rates surging beyond 12,000 cubic meters per second. This remarkable volume represents more than six times the river’s historical average flow, creating powerful currents across the upper circuits and viewing platforms overlooking the cascades.
