U.S. Issues Travel Advisory as Azerbaijan Prepares for Formula 1 Surge in Tourism

As Azerbaijan gears up for the highly anticipated 2026 Formula 1 Grand Prix in Baku, the U.S. Department of State has updated its travel advisory for the country. While Baku itself is open and eagerly preparing for an influx of international visitors, certain border areas remain under caution due to security concerns.

The updated advisory places Azerbaijan at a Level 3: “Reconsider Travel” warning, primarily tied to border regions that have faced armed conflict. Areas such as Aghdam, Gubadli, Jabrayil, Shusha, Zangilan, and parts of the Lachin corridor are flagged due to landmines and the legacy of past conflict. Additionally, the border area with Iran holds a Level 4: “Do Not Travel” warning due to armed conflict risks.

Despite these advisories, Azerbaijan’s tourism activities continue, and the country is poised to welcome thousands of visitors. Heydar Aliyev International Airport in Baku remains fully operational, with Azerbaijan Airlines and other carriers from Europe and the Gulf maintaining regular flights.

The Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, scheduled for September 2026, remains a centerpiece of the country’s tourism calendar. The race, held on Baku’s scenic street circuit, draws spectators from Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. Tourism operators, airlines, and hotels are preparing for high demand during race week, which typically sees Baku bustling with international tourists.

Azerbaijan continues to promote its rich cultural and historical attractions. In 2025, over 2.5 million tourists visited, drawn to UNESCO World Heritage sites like Gobustan’s rock art and Silk Road landmarks. Caspian Sea resorts also remain a highlight.

Travelers are encouraged to stay informed. U.S. authorities recommend emergency plans, travel insurance, and enrollment in embassy notification programs. Yet, for those heading to Baku, the city remains a vibrant destination, combining motorsport excitement with cultural heritage, ensuring Azerbaijan tourism stays on track.
