Minor Hotels has appointed Jason Marques as General Manager of Tivoli Avenida Liberdade, one of Lisbon’s most distinguished luxury hotels. He will officially assume the position on September 1, 2026, bringing more than 20 years of international hospitality experience to the landmark property.
Marques will oversee the hotel’s continued growth while strengthening its reputation for luxury service and memorable guest experiences. His leadership will focus on protecting the property’s heritage while identifying opportunities for innovation, operational improvement and long-term development.
The appointment comes as Lisbon continues attracting leisure visitors, premium travellers, business groups and international events. Strong leadership at one of the city’s best-known hotels can support the destination’s wider luxury hospitality offering and reinforce its appeal to high-value tourism markets.
Before accepting the new position, Marques served for two years as General Manager of Tivoli Alvor Algarve Resort. He joined Minor Hotels in January 2024 and contributed to the resort’s operational development and evolving guest experience.
Preserving more than nine decades of heritage
Tivoli Avenida Liberdade holds an important place in Portugal’s hospitality history. Opened in 1933 as the first Tivoli hotel, the property began the brand’s journey and has remained a symbol of elegance for more than nine decades.
Located on Lisbon’s celebrated Avenida da Liberdade, the hotel forms part of a district known for luxury shopping, architecture and convenient access to the capital’s cultural attractions. Its position makes it attractive to international guests seeking an upscale base near prominent visitor areas.
The property is also part of The Leading Hotels of the World. It represents Tivoli’s focus on personalised service, distinctive design and refined hospitality while retaining the character associated with its historic setting.
Under Marques, the hotel will continue building on that legacy without losing the traditions that shaped its identity. His responsibilities will include working closely with the team to elevate service standards and create experiences suited to modern luxury travellers.
“Taking on the role of General Manager at Tivoli Avenida Liberdade is an enormous privilege,” Marques said. He described the property as part of Lisbon’s identity and Portuguese hospitality history.
Marques added that his ambition is to honour its legacy while collaborating with the team to elevate the guest experience and reinforce the hotel’s established standard of excellence.
Career spanning global luxury destinations
Marques began his hospitality career in 2003 at Pine Cliffs, a Luxury Collection Hotel & Resort in Portugal’s Algarve region. He entered the industry after completing a Sustainable Tourism qualification at INUAF – Instituto Superior Dom Afonso III.
His international career expanded in 2012 when he joined Starwood Hotels & Resorts in Algeria. He initially served as Front Office Manager at Le Méridien Oran Hotel & Convention Centre.
He later advanced to Director of Rooms and Green Belt before becoming Director of Rooms at Sheraton Club des Pins Hotel & Resort. These assignments strengthened his expertise in rooms operations, service delivery and performance management.
In 2016, Marques moved to the Seychelles as Executive Assistant General Manager at Le Méridien Fisherman’s Cove. Two years later, he joined Constance Halaveli Maldives as Resort Manager, gaining further leadership experience in an exclusive island setting.
He returned to the Seychelles in 2020 and helped launch a new Marriott International resort. Serving as both General Manager and Owner’s Representative during the opening phase, he coordinated operational preparation while supporting the property’s wider business objectives.
Corporate experience strengthens operational vision
Marques later joined Marriott International’s corporate team in London as Senior Manager for Franchise Operations across Europe, Africa and the Middle East. In that role, he managed operational performance across 116 hotels in Southern Europe.
The position required close engagement with franchise partners and hotel leaders across different markets. It also expanded his understanding of brand standards, portfolio performance and the operational challenges affecting internationally managed hotels.
This combination of resort, city hotel and corporate leadership experience gives Marques a broad perspective as he assumes responsibility for Tivoli Avenida Liberdade. His career has covered Europe, Africa, the Indian Ocean and the Middle East, exposing him to varied traveller expectations and service cultures.
Supporting Lisbon’s premium visitor economy
Luxury hotels contribute significantly to Lisbon’s tourism economy by supporting employment, restaurants, cultural experiences, premium retail and business events. Established properties also help preserve the destination’s hospitality heritage while meeting changing visitor expectations.
For Tivoli Avenida Liberdade, the next phase will centre on balancing continuity with innovation. Guests increasingly expect personalised service, authentic local connections and efficient operations alongside traditional luxury.
Marques will collaborate with the hotel team to refine those experiences and reinforce the property’s competitive position. His familiarity with the Tivoli brand should also support a smooth leadership transition.
With an international career spanning more than two decades, Marques now takes charge of one of Portugal’s most recognised hotels. His appointment positions Tivoli Avenida Liberdade to preserve its historic character while continuing to evolve within Lisbon’s dynamic luxury tourism landscape.
