The Sun Rose West Hollywood Appoints Kris Umstattd as General Manager to Drive a Bold New Era of Los Angeles Luxury Hospitality

The Sun Rose West Hollywood has appointed Kris Umstattd as general manager, opening a new leadership chapter for the independent luxury hotel on Los Angeles’ legendary Sunset Strip.

Umstattd brings more than 25 years of hospitality experience to the position, including extensive knowledge of the Los Angeles and Southern California markets. He will oversee all operational areas of the property as it prepares to introduce new concepts, enhancements and revitalisation initiatives during the summer season.

His responsibilities will cover the hotel’s guestrooms and suites, signature spa, rooftop restaurant, swimming pool and intimate live music venue, Live at The Sun Rose. He will also guide service delivery, commercial strategy, team development and the wider guest experience.

The appointment comes as the property strengthens its position within the competitive Los Angeles luxury hospitality market following its recognition in the Condé Nast Traveler 2025 Readers’ Choice Awards.

Kris Umstattd Brings More Than 25 Years of Experience

Umstattd began working in hotels and restaurants when he was 14, developing an early understanding of service, operations and the demands of the hospitality industry.

After completing a degree in hotel and restaurant management, he built a career spanning sales, marketing, commercial leadership and hotel operations.

His professional experience includes positions with Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, Fairmont Hotels and Resorts, Kimpton Hotels and Restaurants, Marriott International and Hyatt. These roles exposed him to different approaches to luxury service, lifestyle hospitality, brand development and guest engagement.

Before joining The Sun Rose West Hollywood, Umstattd served as regional director of sales and marketing at Loews Hotels & Co. His commercial background is expected to support the property’s efforts to increase visibility, strengthen demand and attract both leisure visitors and entertainment-industry guests.

His combination of operational and marketing experience provides a broad foundation for leading an independent hotel where design, culture, dining, wellness and entertainment form part of one integrated experience.

Independent Identity Shapes the Guest Experience

The Sun Rose West Hollywood occupies a prominent position on Sunset Boulevard and draws heavily from the cultural character of its surroundings.

The property is located on the former site of the House of Blues, giving it an established connection with the music and entertainment history of the Sunset Strip. Its proximity to recognised venues, including The Comedy Store, further reinforces its location within one of Los Angeles’ best-known nightlife and cultural districts.

As a native Angeleno, Umstattd also has a personal connection with the destination and memories associated with the former House of Blues venue.

That local knowledge could help the hotel create experiences that feel authentically connected to West Hollywood rather than following a standardised luxury model.

Independent hotels increasingly appeal to travellers seeking character, distinctive design and stronger links with the surrounding community. The Sun Rose is positioned to respond to that demand through personalised service, music programming and curated Los Angeles experiences.

Live Music Remains Central to the Hotel’s Character

Live at The Sun Rose is a defining part of the property’s hospitality offering.

The intimate 100-seat music club provides a setting for established performers, emerging artists and special entertainment events. It gives hotel guests direct access to live music while attracting local residents and visitors staying elsewhere in Los Angeles.

This combination of accommodation and entertainment strengthens the property’s destination appeal. Instead of functioning only as a place to stay, the hotel can become part of a wider evening itinerary built around dining, music and Sunset Strip nightlife.

Under Umstattd’s leadership, the venue can continue supporting the property’s identity while creating opportunities for cultural partnerships, private performances and entertainment-focused travel packages.

Rooftop, Spa and Dining Support Luxury Positioning

Beyond music, The Sun Rose combines several experiences designed for modern luxury travellers.

Its rooftop includes dining spaces, a bar, a swimming pool and views across Los Angeles. Meanwhile, the signature spa and fitness facilities support the growing demand for wellness within city hotels.

The property also offers in-room dining, social spaces and curated experiences ranging from rooftop events to personalised activities around Los Angeles.

Coordinating these different elements will be central to Umstattd’s role. Guests increasingly expect a consistent level of service across arrival, accommodation, dining, entertainment and wellness.

Strong operational leadership can ensure that each department contributes to a unified hotel identity rather than functioning as an isolated facility.

New Leadership Could Strengthen West Hollywood Tourism

The appointment has wider significance for West Hollywood’s visitor economy.

Luxury hotels generate demand for restaurants, music venues, retailers, transport providers and cultural attractions throughout the surrounding area. A stronger independent property can also increase competition and encourage continued investment across the Sunset Strip.

Upcoming concepts and property enhancements may provide returning travellers with new reasons to visit while increasing the hotel’s appeal among first-time guests.

With Kris Umstattd now leading operations, The Sun Rose West Hollywood is positioned to combine experienced hospitality management with the music, culture and independent character that define its iconic Los Angeles location.
