Indian Railways has extended the operating period of 10 special trains connecting Delhi with major destinations in Bihar and Jharkhand, providing additional capacity across several heavily travelled long-distance routes.
The extended services connect New Delhi, Anand Vihar Terminal and Shakur Basti with Barauni, Darbhanga, Purnia Court, Saharsa and Dhanbad. Depending on the route, individual trains will make four, nine or 31 additional trips through August and early September.
The decision will benefit passengers travelling for employment, education, business, family visits and domestic tourism. It will also provide more booking options during a period when demand for trains between the national capital region and eastern India remains strong.
Indian Railways has been operating thousands of special train trips during the 2026 peak travel season to manage passenger demand, reduce waiting lists and improve connectivity on high-demand corridors.
Daily Barauni Trains Extended Through August
The largest extension applies to the daily services between Barauni Junction and New Delhi.
Train No. 02563 Barauni Junction–New Delhi, which was previously scheduled to operate until July 31, will now continue daily until August 31. The revised timetable adds 31 journeys.
Train No. 02564 New Delhi–Barauni Junction has also been extended. Instead of ending on August 1, it will continue operating every day until September 1, adding another 31 trips.
Barauni is a major railway junction serving travellers from several parts of Bihar. Continued daily operations will increase available capacity while helping passengers connect with regional trains serving other cities and districts.
The extension is particularly important for travellers who may otherwise face limited ticket availability on regular services.
Darbhanga Route Retains Daily Connectivity
Passengers travelling between Delhi and Darbhanga will also benefit from a full month of additional daily services.
Train No. 02569 Darbhanga–New Delhi will now operate until August 31. Meanwhile, Train No. 02570 New Delhi–Darbhanga will continue until September 1.
Each train receives 31 additional departures under the revised schedule.
Darbhanga is an important gateway to northern Bihar and the wider Mithila region. The route serves students, workers, families and visitors travelling between the national capital and destinations across the state.
Maintaining daily connectivity can also support domestic visitor movement by improving access to the region’s cultural, religious and heritage destinations.
Dhanbad Services Strengthen Jharkhand Links
The extension also improves rail connectivity between Delhi and Jharkhand’s major industrial centre of Dhanbad.
Train No. 03639 Dhanbad–Shakur Basti operates on Mondays and Fridays. Its service period has been extended until August 31, adding nine journeys.
The return Train No. 03640 Shakur Basti–Dhanbad runs on Tuesdays and Saturdays. It will now continue until September 1, also providing nine additional trips.
These services support passenger movement along an important corridor linking Jharkhand’s mining and business districts with the Delhi metropolitan region.
Additional operations may also benefit travellers connecting through Dhanbad to other parts of Jharkhand and neighbouring West Bengal.
Purnia Court Trains Continue into September
Eastern Bihar will retain direct special train connectivity with Anand Vihar Terminal through extended Purnia Court services.
Train No. 05579 Purnia Court–Anand Vihar Terminal, operating on Fridays and Sundays, has been extended until August 30. It will make nine additional journeys.
Train No. 05580 Anand Vihar Terminal–Purnia Court runs on Sundays and Tuesdays. The service will continue until September 1, adding nine trips.
Purnia serves as an important transport centre for northeastern Bihar. The extension provides passengers from Purnia and surrounding districts with continued access to the national capital without requiring additional transfers.
Saharsa Passengers Receive Extra Weekly Trips
Special services between Saharsa and Anand Vihar Terminal have also received shorter extensions.
Train No. 05575 Saharsa–Anand Vihar Terminal, which operates every Tuesday, will continue until August 25. The extension adds four services.
Train No. 05576 Anand Vihar Terminal–Saharsa will operate every Thursday until August 27, providing four additional return journeys.
Although the route operates weekly, the extra trips will offer valuable capacity for passengers from the Kosi region and surrounding areas of northern Bihar.
Extra Trains Ease Peak Travel Pressure
The 10 extended services provide 168 additional train trips across both directions when all notified extensions are combined.
Daily services to Barauni and Darbhanga account for most of the added journeys. However, the continued weekly and twice-weekly connections to Dhanbad, Purnia Court and Saharsa further widen travel options across Bihar and Jharkhand.
The extensions can reduce pressure on regular trains, improve ticket availability and support more predictable journey planning. They may also strengthen domestic tourism by making family, cultural and religious travel more accessible.
Passengers should verify departure times, boarding stations and operational updates through official Indian Railways enquiry services before travelling. The extension changes the operating dates, while previously announced timings, stops and other service conditions are expected to remain unchanged.
By continuing these special trains through August and early September, Indian Railways is strengthening connectivity between Delhi and eastern India while providing passengers with greater capacity, flexibility and convenience during a busy travel period.
