Emirates has unveiled the world’s first electrically powered Premium Economy seat with a full-height adjustable privacy screen, raising expectations for comfort between Economy and Business Class.
The new seat will debut aboard newly delivered Emirates Airbus A350 aircraft. It combines electronic positioning, personal privacy, upgraded device charging and enhanced ergonomic support within a spacious Premium Economy cabin.
Passengers can raise or lower the divider using controls built into the seat. They can then lock the screen at their preferred height, creating a more private environment for sleeping, dining, working or watching entertainment.
Privacy dividers have traditionally appeared in higher cabin classes. Their introduction into Premium Economy reflects growing demand from travellers who want personal space and long-haul comfort without purchasing a Business Class ticket.

Airbus A350 introduces a spacious layout
The new Emirates A350 Premium Economy cabin will contain 28 seats in a 2-3-2 configuration. Each seat measures 20 inches wide, while pitch reaches up to 39 inches.
This layout gives passengers more room than a standard Economy cabin while maintaining a larger seating capacity than Business Class.
The seat reclines into a cradle position without intruding into the space of the passenger behind. This design addresses a common cabin problem, where reclining can reduce another traveller’s usable area.
Passengers can adjust their seating position through an integrated control unit. Dedicated lounge and meal modes simplify the process by moving the seat into positions intended for relaxation or dining.
The system makes this Emirates’ first fully electric Premium Economy seat. It also signals a broader development within aviation, as airlines move beyond additional legroom and redesign the complete premium travel experience.
Privacy brings Business Class inspiration
The divider gives passengers greater control over their immediate surroundings, particularly during overnight and long-distance journeys. Solo travellers can create a more secluded area, while companions can lower the screen when they want a shared experience.
However, the product remains distinct from Emirates Business Class. Business Class continues to offer fully flat beds, direct aisle access, more personal space and an elevated range of ground and onboard services.
Premium Economy instead serves travellers seeking a stronger middle option. It combines additional space and refined service with fares that generally remain below Business Class levels.
This positioning could appeal to leisure travellers upgrading for an important holiday, older passengers seeking easier long-haul comfort and corporate travellers whose policies do not cover Business Class.
Smarter features support connected travellers
Emirates is introducing wireless device charging in Premium Economy for the first time through the new seat. Every position also includes USB-C charging for compatible smartphones, tablets and other personal electronics.
A tray table incorporates a phone holder, allowing passengers to place their devices securely while eating. The feature can turn a personal phone into a second screen alongside the main entertainment display.
Each seat offers a 13.3-inch 4K HDR touchscreen connected to the airline’s ice inflight entertainment system. The display provides high-definition content with responsive navigation.
Passengers aboard newly delivered A350 aircraft will also gain additional exterior camera views. Left and right perspectives will join existing forward and downward views, creating a more immersive look at the flight.

U-Dream headrest improves ergonomic support
The seat also incorporates Emirates’ U-Dream headrest developed with Safran Seats. Its adjustable leather wings support the head and neck in several positions.
The design aims to prevent a passenger’s head from falling forward or sideways while resting upright. This support may improve sleep quality and reduce discomfort during longer flights.
A manually deployable leather footrest provides additional leg support. Together with the cradle-style recline and adjustable headrest, it creates a more relaxed seating position without converting into a bed.
