Victoria Winter Transport Blitz Hits Sunbury, Melton, Ballarat, Newport and Point Cook With Weeks of Road and Rail Disruptions

Travelers across Victoria are being urged to plan ahead as a major winter construction blitz brings temporary road closures, replacement buses and altered train services to Melbourne and surrounding regional corridors.

Sunbury, Melton, Ballarat, Newport, Point Cook, Werribee and Wyndham Vale are among the communities affected as crews advance projects designed to remove level crossings, improve road safety, upgrade stations and strengthen the state’s transport network.

The works will create short-term inconvenience for commuters, businesses and visitors. However, the programme is intended to reduce congestion, improve reliability and support population growth across some of Victoria’s fastest-expanding areas.

For tourists exploring Melbourne and regional Victoria, the disruptions may affect airport transfers, rail journeys, road trips and connections to accommodation. Travelers should check schedules before departure and allow additional time when moving through affected locations.

Sunbury Line Passengers Face June Replacement Buses

Passengers using the Sunbury Line will encounter service changes during two weekends in June.

Buses will replace sections of the Sunbury, Frankston, Cranbourne and Pakenham lines on June 13–14 and June 27–28, including Metro Tunnel services. The closures will allow crews to carry out maintenance works near Armadale Station.

Further changes are planned during the July school holidays. The Metro Tunnel will close from 9 p.m. on July 7 until the final train service on July 12, allowing temporary tracks to be removed.

Visitors relying on rail connections should review alternative routes carefully, particularly when traveling with luggage or coordinating hotel check-ins, tours and event bookings.

Melton Bridge and Station Works Advance

Melton will become a major focus of the winter construction programme as crews continue building a new road bridge over the railway line and progress work on the new Melton Station.

Ferris Road will close to traffic from June 23 until July 15 while the project advances. Motorists should expect detours and altered local traffic conditions.

Additional level crossing removal works will affect Coburns Road and Exford Road at times during August and September.

The long-term improvements are designed to make Melton safer and more accessible while preparing the corridor for future transport demand. Better station facilities and fewer level crossings can support local businesses and make travel easier for residents and visitors exploring western Victoria.

Ballarat Line Travelers Must Use Replacement Coaches

Regional passengers will also face temporary changes.

Coaches will replace trains on sections of the Ballarat Line from July 22 until the final service on July 26. Additional train service adjustments are expected during August, with details to be confirmed closer to the works.

The Ballarat corridor is an important tourism route connecting Melbourne with one of Victoria’s best-known regional destinations. Visitors traveling for heritage attractions, cultural experiences and weekend stays should build extra time into their itineraries and confirm onward transport arrangements.

Newport Level Crossing Removal Brings Road Closure

In Newport, Maddox Road will close from June 18 until July 1 as level crossing removal works continue.

Victoria’s wider programme aims to remove 110 dangerous and congested level crossings across Melbourne by 2032. The projects are designed to improve safety, ease traffic delays and strengthen train reliability.

For road users navigating Melbourne’s west, advance route planning will be particularly important as multiple projects progress simultaneously.

Point Cook Road Bridge Closure Extends Into September

Point Cook will experience one of the most significant disruptions of the winter period.

The Point Cook Road bridge over the Princes Freeway will close from 10 p.m. on June 28 until mid-September as work advances on the Point Cook Road and Central Avenue Intersection Upgrade.

Delays of up to 30 minutes are expected during peak periods. Motorists should consider alternative routes and allow additional travel time.

The project will replace the former roundabout with a signal-controlled intersection, add lanes near the junction, improve pedestrian connections and create a new outbound freeway exit ramp.

Werribee and Wyndham Vale Projects Continue

Road projects at Ison Road in Werribee and Ballan Road in Wyndham Vale will also cause intermittent closures throughout winter.

These western growth-corridor upgrades are intended to improve road connectivity and accommodate rising travel demand as residential development continues.

The combined works highlight the scale of Victoria’s transport transformation. While disruptions will require patience, the upgrades are expected to improve future journeys for commuters, regional passengers and tourists.

Travelers should monitor official transport updates, plan alternatives early and allow extra time when visiting affected destinations during the winter construction period.
