The Atterbury Hotel Opens in Downtown Pittsburgh, Transforming Historic Fulton Building Into a Luxury Landmark

The Atterbury, Autograph Collection has officially opened in downtown Pittsburgh, introducing a major new hospitality destination inside the historic Fulton Building and strengthening the city’s appeal for leisure travel, conventions, sporting events and urban cultural tourism.

The launch follows a multi-million-dollar transformation led by RLJ Lodging Trust, which has repositioned the century-old property as a 300-room hotel combining preserved architectural character with contemporary interiors, modern guest services and destination-led dining.

Located at 107 Sixth Street, the hotel places guests near Market Square, the Allegheny Riverfront, PNC Park and the David L. Lawrence Convention Center. Its central position gives visitors convenient access to downtown restaurants, entertainment venues, business districts and major cultural attractions.

The opening also expands Marriott Bonvoy’s Autograph Collection presence in Pittsburgh, offering travellers a distinctive hotel shaped by local history rather than a standardised design approach.

Historic Fulton Building Begins a New Chapter

Originally completed in 1906, the Fulton Building was designed by architect Grosvenor Atterbury for industrialist Henry Phipps, a prominent figure associated with Carnegie Steel.

The building has remained an important part of Pittsburgh’s architectural identity for more than a century. Its latest transformation preserves that heritage while adapting the property for a new generation of travellers.

The restoration retains several of the building’s most recognisable features, including its grand rotunda and dramatic central atrium. Contemporary design elements have been introduced alongside these historic details, creating interiors influenced by Pittsburgh’s industrial past, riverfront setting and cultural evolution.

Guestrooms and suites have been redesigned as modern urban retreats, with accommodation ranging from standard rooms to larger suites and a signature Presidential Suite. Many rooms provide views of the Allegheny River, the downtown skyline or PNC Park, while selected accommodations feature private outdoor terraces.

Art Programme Celebrates Pittsburgh Identity

A curated art collection plays a central role in the hotel’s design and storytelling.

Inspired by Grosvenor Atterbury and his wife Astelle’s interest in the arts, the programme includes portraits, collages and commissioned works that explore the history of the Fulton Building and Pittsburgh’s broader transformation.

Pieces created by local artists reference the city’s steel heritage, rivers and architectural landmarks. These works help connect visitors with Pittsburgh’s identity while reinforcing the hotel’s strong sense of place.

The restored atrium also hosts an immersive installation known as “The Moment.” Presented through a combination of lighting, projection and sound, the experience activates the historic interior and creates a changing visual centrepiece for guests.

The installation can also be adapted for weddings, conferences and private events, adding a distinctive experiential element to the hotel’s meetings and celebrations offering.

Event Spaces Target Convention and Group Travel

The Atterbury enters the market with extensive flexible meeting and event facilities designed for corporate gatherings, social functions and destination weddings.

Its downtown location near the convention centre is expected to support Pittsburgh’s business events sector by providing additional upscale accommodation and gathering spaces for conference delegates and professional groups.

The Fulton Room offers a more intimate setting for receptions, informal meetings and private gatherings, while the hotel’s larger function areas can accommodate a range of events.

This combination of historic surroundings, modern technology and adaptable venues positions the property to benefit from Pittsburgh’s growing convention, sports and event travel markets.

The Drafting Room Anchors Hotel Dining

Dining at The Atterbury is led by The Drafting Room, a contemporary American restaurant designed to operate as a social hub throughout the day.

Its menu combines familiar regional flavours with refined presentation. Signature dishes include short rib pierogies, bacon-wrapped shrimp with cheddar grits, braised oxtail and seafood pasta prepared with Creole-inspired flavours.

The restaurant also offers vegetable-led starters, premium cheeses and curated charcuterie selections. A themed beverage menu draws inspiration from architecture and construction, with cocktail categories named Blueprints, Permits and Assembly.

Non-alcoholic beverages expand the programme for guests seeking alternatives, while a planned weekend brunch will introduce dishes such as smoked salmon Benedict, crab omelettes, Croque Madame and warm bread pudding.

By creating a restaurant intended for both hotel guests and local residents, the property aims to become part of downtown Pittsburgh’s broader dining and social scene.

New Hotel Strengthens Pittsburgh Tourism

The Atterbury opens as Pittsburgh continues to build its reputation as a destination for architecture, culture, professional sports, riverfront experiences and business travel.

Its 300 rooms add meaningful capacity to the downtown hotel market, particularly during major conventions, baseball games, weddings and citywide events.

The property’s combination of preserved heritage, contemporary accommodation, dining and meeting facilities also supports the wider revitalisation of downtown Pittsburgh.

By transforming one of the city’s landmark buildings into a modern hospitality destination, The Atterbury introduces a new visitor experience while keeping Pittsburgh’s architectural story at the centre of its identity.
