Emirates A350 Debuts on Dubai–Cape Town Route, Unlocking a New Era of Premium South Africa Travel

South Africa’s international aviation market has entered a new phase as Emirates introduces its next-generation Airbus A350 on the Dubai–Cape Town route, expanding passenger choice and strengthening connectivity between the Middle East and one of Africa’s leading tourism destinations.

The aircraft entered service on Emirates’ third daily Cape Town rotation from 1 July 2026. Its arrival brings the airline’s Premium Economy cabin to the route while creating a mixed wide-body operation featuring the Airbus A350, Airbus A380 and Boeing 777.

The development represents more than an aircraft replacement. Emirates’ third daily frequency increases travel options between Dubai and Cape Town while supporting connections from Europe, Asia, the Middle East and the Americas through the airline’s global hub.

Third Daily Flight Expands Cape Town Capacity

Emirates announced the additional daily Cape Town service after sustained demand for travel to and from South Africa. The extra rotation increases overall seat availability and gives passengers greater flexibility when planning leisure holidays, corporate journeys and connecting itineraries.

The A350-operated service complements the airline’s existing daily flights, allowing Emirates to match different aircraft sizes and cabin products with passenger demand throughout the day.

For Cape Town, the additional frequency strengthens international accessibility during a period of growing long-haul visitor interest. The city welcomed approximately 1.44 million foreign overnight visitors during 2025, with international travellers staying an average of 9.5 nights.

Foreign visitor spending reached an estimated R19 billion, demonstrating the importance of long-haul tourism to hotels, restaurants, attractions, transport operators and communities across the metropolitan area.

Premium Economy Arrives on Dubai–Cape Town Route

One of the most important passenger benefits is the introduction of Emirates Premium Economy on the Cape Town service. The cabin provides an option between Economy Class and Business Class for travellers seeking additional comfort without purchasing a premium business fare.

Emirates’ A350 configuration includes Business Class, Premium Economy and Economy Class. Premium Economy offers wider seating, increased legroom and an upgraded dining and service experience designed for longer international journeys.

The cabin could attract affluent leisure travellers, corporate passengers and families seeking greater comfort on the approximately nine-hour journey between Dubai and Cape Town.

Business Class passengers also receive Emirates’ latest seating and onboard technology, while Economy Class travellers benefit from the A350’s modern cabin design, entertainment systems and quieter environment.

Airbus A350 Improves Long-Haul Comfort

The Airbus A350 has been designed around long-range efficiency and passenger wellbeing. Its cabin features high ceilings, wider interior spaces and advanced lighting systems intended to create a more comfortable atmosphere during extended flights.

Air inside the cabin is renewed regularly through advanced filtration systems, while the aircraft operates with a lower cabin altitude than many older-generation jets. These features can help reduce passenger fatigue on long-haul journeys.

The A350 is also recognised for its quieter cabin and reduced external noise footprint. For airlines, its lightweight composite structure and modern engines help lower fuel consumption and emissions compared with earlier aircraft generations.

These operational advantages allow Emirates to deploy capacity more efficiently while maintaining the onboard experience expected by premium international travellers.

Cape Town Gains Stronger Global Tourism Access

Cape Town continues to attract international visitors with its combination of beaches, mountains, cultural districts, vineyards, cuisine and wildlife experiences. Major attractions include Table Mountain, the V&A Waterfront, Robben Island and the Cape Peninsula.

Improved links through Dubai allow travellers from numerous international markets to reach Cape Town using a single connecting hub. This is particularly valuable for passengers arriving from destinations without nonstop services to South Africa.

The upgraded route may also support multi-destination holidays combining Cape Town with Dubai or other destinations across Emirates’ network.

Luxury hotels, safari operators, wine estates and premium tourism providers stand to benefit from the expanded availability of high-end seating. Greater flight choice can encourage longer stays, higher visitor spending and increased demand during both peak and shoulder seasons.

Dubai–Cape Town Corridor Supports Business Travel

The route is also important for commercial connectivity. Dubai serves as a major centre for finance, trade, logistics and tourism, while Cape Town has growing technology, creative, hospitality and professional services sectors.

Three daily flights provide business travellers with improved scheduling flexibility and access to onward services throughout Emirates’ international network.

Enhanced air connectivity can support meetings, investment activity, conferences and trade relationships between Southern Africa and the Gulf region. It may also encourage greater movement of travellers between Cape Town and markets across Asia.

Emirates Strengthens Its South Africa Network

Emirates has served South Africa since launching Johannesburg flights in 1995 and has gradually expanded its presence to include Cape Town and Durban.

The A350 deployment demonstrates the airline’s continued investment in the market while supporting its broader fleet modernisation programme. Emirates is introducing new A350 aircraft and upgrading existing Boeing 777 and Airbus A380 cabins across its global network.

By operating three different wide-body aircraft types to Cape Town, the airline can balance capacity, passenger demand and onboard products across multiple daily departures.

The arrival of the Emirates A350 gives Cape Town a stronger position in the competitive long-haul tourism market. Additional capacity, Premium Economy and improved connecting options create new opportunities for South Africa’s visitor economy while delivering a more comfortable journey between Dubai and Cape Town.
