Airlink Launches Direct Johannesburg–Zanzibar Flights, Transforming South Africa’s Beach Holiday Connectivity

South Africa and Tanzania have entered a new phase of regional aviation connectivity following Airlink’s launch of direct flights between Johannesburg and Zanzibar. The year-round service began on 3 June 2026, creating a convenient new link between Southern Africa’s largest aviation hub and one of East Africa’s most popular island destinations.

Airlink is operating two weekly return flights between O.R. Tambo International Airport and Zanzibar’s Abeid Amani Karume International Airport. The route uses the airline’s new-generation Embraer E195-E2 aircraft, making Zanzibar the first international destination served by Airlink’s latest flagship jet.

The service also connects travellers from Durban, Gqeberha, George and other cities across Airlink’s regional network through Johannesburg. As a result, passengers can reach Zanzibar with fewer travel complications while benefiting from coordinated onward connections.

Twice-Weekly Service Supports Year-Round Demand

Flights depart Johannesburg on Wednesdays and Sundays, while return services leave Zanzibar on Mondays and Thursdays. The outbound journey departs Johannesburg at midday and reaches Zanzibar during the afternoon, providing leisure travellers with convenient daytime travel.

Airlink will introduce a third weekly return frequency between 15 December 2026 and 13 January 2027 to accommodate demand during the peak Southern Hemisphere summer holiday period. The temporary expansion highlights Zanzibar’s growing popularity among South African travellers seeking Indian Ocean beach escapes.

The new route complements Airlink’s wider regional growth strategy and supports its role in connecting major urban centres with leisure, commercial and underserved destinations across Africa.

Modern Aircraft Improves the Passenger Journey

Airlink’s Embraer E195-E2 can accommodate up to 136 passengers and features a cabin layout without middle seats. Every passenger therefore receives either an aisle or window seat, providing additional comfort during the journey between Johannesburg and Zanzibar.

The aircraft also delivers improved fuel efficiency compared with older-generation regional jets. This supports Airlink’s ability to operate longer African routes while managing operating costs and reducing fuel consumption.

Passengers receive complimentary meals and refreshments during the flight. Discounted economy tickets include 20 kilograms of checked baggage, while full-fare economy passengers receive a 30-kilogram allowance. Travellers can also carry up to 15 kilograms of sporting equipment without additional charge, an important benefit for passengers planning diving, fishing or other marine activities.

Zanzibar Becomes Easier to Reach

Zanzibar’s beaches, resort sector, spice farms and marine environment have established the Tanzanian archipelago as a leading international holiday destination. The new direct service makes the island more accessible to travellers from South Africa and neighbouring markets connected through Johannesburg.

Visitors can combine beach holidays with cultural experiences in Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its distinctive Swahili urban character and historic links with African, Arab, Indian and European trading communities.

The island also attracts travellers interested in diving, snorkelling, traditional dhow excursions, local cuisine and nature-based tourism. Expanded air access could encourage longer stays while supporting resorts, guesthouses, restaurants, tour operators and transport businesses.

Airlink’s schedule also allows South African travellers to avoid indirect itineraries through additional international hubs, giving holidaymakers more time at their destination.

Johannesburg Strengthens Its Hub Position

O.R. Tambo International Airport serves as Airlink’s principal hub and provides connections across the airline’s network of 48 destinations in 15 countries. The timing of the Zanzibar flights enables passengers from several South African and regional cities to travel through Johannesburg on coordinated itineraries.

Travellers from Durban, Gqeberha and George can connect through O.R. Tambo, while passengers arriving from elsewhere in Southern Africa may also gain easier access to the Tanzanian island.

Johannesburg’s international airline partnerships further expand the route’s potential. Visitors travelling from outside Africa can connect onto Airlink services, while passengers departing Zanzibar can access international flights through Johannesburg.

This network structure supports multi-destination tourism by allowing travellers to combine Zanzibar with Johannesburg, Cape Town, wildlife areas and other Southern African destinations.

Tourism and Trade Opportunities Increase

The route is expected to generate tourism opportunities for both South Africa and Tanzania. Increased passenger flows can support accommodation providers, travel agencies, attractions and local transport operators, while greater convenience may stimulate repeat travel and short holiday breaks.

The service also carries commercial importance. Zanzibar’s economy includes tourism, agriculture, fishing, manufacturing and marine industries, creating potential demand from investors and business travellers alongside the core leisure market.

Improved air links can strengthen commercial relationships, encourage professional travel and support wider economic cooperation between Southern and East Africa.

Airlink Builds a Larger Zanzibar Network

Airlink’s Johannesburg service represents the beginning of a broader expansion into Zanzibar. The airline is also preparing to introduce a nonstop Cape Town–Zanzibar route in October 2026, further widening access to the island from South Africa.

Together, the services position Zanzibar as an increasingly important destination within Airlink’s network and provide travellers with more options for reaching the Indian Ocean.

The Johannesburg–Zanzibar route demonstrates how direct regional flights can reduce journey times, expand destination choice and strengthen African tourism integration. With modern aircraft, convenient connections and additional peak-season capacity, Airlink is opening new opportunities for beach holidays, business travel and multi-country African itineraries.
