Dubai International Airport is entering one of its busiest summer travel periods, with around three million passengers expected to pass through its terminals during the first half of July 2026.
Daily traffic is forecast to exceed 200,000 passengers as Dubai residents begin summer holidays and international travellers continue connecting through the global aviation hub. The main departure surge began on 2 July, while Emirates expects particularly heavy volumes at Terminal 3 from 3 to 5 July and across subsequent summer weekends.
Emirates has issued a detailed passenger advisory urging customers to arrive early, complete digital processes before reaching the airport and use biometric and off-site check-in services wherever possible.
Travellers Should Arrive Three Hours Early
Emirates recommends that customers reach Dubai International Airport three hours before their scheduled departure.
Passengers should complete immigration procedures at least 90 minutes before departure and arrive at their boarding gate one hour before the flight. These timelines are especially important at Terminal 3, where travellers may require additional time to pass through check-in, security and immigration before moving between concourses.
Walking times can also be significant. Depending on the concourse, reaching a departure gate may take between 15 and 25 minutes after security.
Passengers arriving late risk missing flights even when they have already checked in online, as gate closure and document-processing deadlines continue to apply.
Online Check-In Opens 48 Hours Before Departure
Travellers can check in through the Emirates website or mobile application from 48 hours before departure.
The Emirates app allows passengers to select seats, access digital boarding passes for most destinations, receive flight notifications and manage elements of their booking before travelling to the airport.
Using these services can reduce time spent at staffed counters, although passengers with checked baggage must still use a bag-drop facility.
Self-service check-in and baggage-drop kiosks are available near the Terminal 3 entrance. Emirates Check-in Ports also allow customers to complete formalities with staff using portable processing stations.
Biometric Systems Create a Faster Airport Journey
Eligible Emirates passengers can register for the airline’s biometric service and use facial recognition at several Terminal 3 touchpoints.
Biometric Smart Zones support check-in, immigration clearance, lounge entry and boarding at selected locations. Emirates Skywards members can register through the app by scanning an eligible passport, taking a photograph and providing consent.
The technology allows registered passengers to move through certain airport procedures without repeatedly presenting a passport or boarding pass. Smart Gate eligibility varies according to nationality, residency status and passport type, while the biometric service remains voluntary.
Passengers who choose not to register can continue using traditional documents and staffed channels.
Early and City Check-In Can Reduce Congestion
Emirates customers departing Dubai can check in and drop baggage at the airport up to 24 hours before departure. For flights to the United States, the early baggage-drop window begins 12 hours before departure.
Travellers can also use the Emirates City Check-in and Travel Store at ICD Brookfield Place in Dubai International Financial Centre. Baggage can be accepted from 24 hours until four hours before departure.
A separate 24-hour check-in facility operates at Ajman Central Bus Terminal, allowing passengers from the northern emirates to complete check-in and baggage procedures before travelling to DXB.
Home Check-in is another option for passengers in Dubai and Sharjah. An agent visits the customer’s home, hotel or office, completes check-in and transports checked baggage to the airport. The service must normally be booked at least 24 hours before departure and is complimentary for eligible First Class customers and Emirates Skywards Platinum members.
Dubai Metro Offers an Alternative to Road Traffic
Emirates is recommending the Dubai Metro as a practical option for avoiding congestion on roads approaching the airport.
The Red Line serves Airport Terminal 3 directly. Regular station hours are from 5am until midnight between Monday and Thursday and on Saturday. Friday services operate until 1am, while Sunday services begin at 8am and finish at midnight. Travellers should check special holiday schedules before departure.
Inside Terminal 3, a complimentary train links Concourses A and B. Shuttle buses operate between Concourses A and C every 20 minutes, with an average journey time of approximately 20 minutes.
Baggage Rules Could Prevent Security Delays
Passengers should review baggage restrictions before packing. Power banks must travel in hand baggage and cannot be placed in checked luggage.
Smart bags can be accepted in the cabin when their batteries are removable and the baggage complies with cabin size and weight rules. Electronic cigarettes and personal vaporizers must also be carried in hand luggage and protected against accidental activation.
With summer passenger numbers rising sharply, travellers who check in early, use biometric facilities and plan their airport transport carefully will be best positioned to avoid unnecessary delays at Dubai International Airport.
