Iberia has won the Best Airline Staff Service in Europe title at the Skytrax World Airline Awards 2026.
The award recognises the customer experience delivered by Iberia employees across airport and onboard operations. It places particular emphasis on the professionalism, hospitality and consistency of cabin crew and ground teams.
Skytrax announced the honour during its 2026 awards ceremony at The Langham in London on 18 September. Iberia leaders and representatives from the airline’s operational teams attended the event.
The recognition arrives as Iberia advances Flight Plan 2030, its long-term transformation strategy. The programme includes investment in employees, cabins, digital services and airport facilities.
Iberia also ranked 16th among the world’s top 20 airlines in the 2026 results. The combined recognition strengthens its international position as competition across European aviation intensifies.
Passenger Feedback Determines Winner
The World Airline Awards use an international passenger satisfaction survey to select winners across numerous aviation categories.
The 2025–2026 survey ran from September 2025 until August 2026. Travellers from more than 100 nationalities participated during the assessment period.
The awards programme recorded 24.8 million valid customer responses. More than 300 airlines appeared within the wider survey results.
Skytrax screened entries to identify duplicate, suspicious and ineligible submissions. The survey was available in English, French, Portuguese, Spanish, Turkish, Chinese, Japanese and Korean.
Airlines do not pay registration or entry fees to participate. Skytrax also funds the survey and awards process without sponsorship.
The passenger-led methodology makes the staff-service award especially important for Iberia. It reflects traveller perceptions of employees encountered across different stages of the journey.
Employees Shape Complete Travel Experience
Airline service begins before passengers enter an aircraft. Ground teams guide customers through check-in, boarding, connections, disruptions and arrival procedures.
Cabin crew then influence safety, comfort and hospitality throughout the flight. Their ability to communicate clearly and respond personally can shape a traveller’s overall impression.
Marco Sansavini, President and Chief Executive Officer of Iberia, described employees as the airline’s greatest asset.
He said the award recognised the professionalism and commitment of thousands of people who earn customer trust. Their work also helps passengers feel welcome when travelling with Iberia.
Sansavini emphasised that airlines involve much more than aircraft, destinations and physical products. Employees bring the brand to life across daily operations.
This human element becomes particularly important during delays or unexpected changes. Clear information and thoughtful assistance can reduce stress while protecting confidence in the airline.
Flight Plan 2030 Prioritises Customer Care
Iberia is using Flight Plan 2030 to improve the passenger experience at each journey stage.
The strategy combines investment in people with upgrades to products and digital capabilities. Its goal is to deliver more personalised, consistent and seamless services.
Digitalisation can simplify booking, check-in and travel management. However, Iberia’s Skytrax recognition underlines the continuing value of personal interaction.
The airline’s approach connects technology with human service rather than treating them as competing priorities. Digital tools can handle routine processes while employees support travellers with more complex needs.
Consistency will remain a central challenge. Passengers expect similar standards across airports, aircraft types, cabin classes and route lengths.
The award creates a strong benchmark as Iberia continues its transformation. It also increases expectations that service quality will remain visible throughout future operational changes.
Long-Haul Cabins Prepare for Renewal
Iberia plans to upgrade the interiors of its entire long-haul fleet as part of its customer-experience investment.
Updated cabins could improve comfort, functionality and the visual consistency of long-distance services. The programme will support passengers travelling between Europe and Iberia’s wider international network.
On short- and medium-haul aircraft, the airline plans to install larger XL overhead bins. The additional space should make storing cabin baggage easier and reduce congestion during boarding.
Overhead storage has become a significant passenger concern as more travellers rely on hand luggage. Better capacity can support smoother boarding while limiting uncertainty around available space.
These physical improvements complement the service delivered by Iberia employees. Cabin design can create comfort, but effective staff interactions remain essential throughout the journey.
Madrid Lounge Strengthens Premium Offering
Iberia is also improving facilities at its Madrid hub.
The airline recently opened the Emerald Lounge Sorolla at Terminal 4 of Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport. The space offers an upgraded pre-flight environment for eligible premium customers.
Access extends to qualifying Platino, Platino Prime, Infinita, Infinita Prime and Singular customers.
Airport lounges support the wider premium journey by providing space to rest, dine or work before departure. They are especially valuable for passengers connecting through Madrid on longer itineraries.
Award Builds Momentum for Iberia
Iberia’s latest Skytrax success recognises employees working both visibly and behind the scenes.
The award also gives the airline a competitive advantage as European carriers invest heavily in cabins, lounges, technology and personalised services.
For travellers, the recognition provides an indication of how other passengers rated Iberia’s staff experience. Nevertheless, service can vary across individual airports and flights.
Iberia now faces the task of maintaining its award-winning human approach while delivering Flight Plan 2030. Its planned investments suggest that people, technology and upgraded facilities will jointly shape the airline’s next phase.
