Uganda Airlines Makes African Aviation History With Amadeus SkyWORKS Launch

Uganda Airlines has become the first carrier in Africa to implement Amadeus SkyWORKS, introducing advanced schedule-management technology to support its expanding regional and international network.

The platform gives the Ugandan national carrier greater control over schedule planning, editing and distribution. It can also help teams assess whether proposed flight programmes are operationally viable before services enter the market.

For travellers, stronger schedule management can support more dependable connectivity and better coordinated journeys. The technology could prove particularly valuable as Uganda Airlines develops connections between East Africa and markets across Africa, Europe, the Middle East and Asia.

The implementation deepens the airline’s existing technology partnership with Amadeus. Uganda Airlines already uses the company’s systems across areas including passenger services, reservations, revenue management and loyalty.

SkyWORKS now introduces another layer of digital capability. It creates a central source for schedule information while allowing commercial teams to examine different network scenarios more efficiently.

Technology strengthens flight planning

Airline schedules involve much more than publishing departure and arrival times. Planners must consider aircraft availability, airport slots, maintenance needs, connection opportunities and anticipated passenger demand.

A change affecting one route can influence several other services across the network. Therefore, access to accurate information and multiple schedule views can improve decision-making.

Amadeus SkyWORKS allows Uganda Airlines to edit and distribute schedules while automatically monitoring their feasibility. The system can also generate reports and help teams compare alternative commercial scenarios.

This flexibility could make it easier to test potential frequencies, timings and destinations before committing aircraft. It can also support faster responses when demand changes or operational conditions affect the network.

Shakila Rahim Lamar, Acting Chief Commercial Officer at Uganda Airlines, described the rollout as a transformative addition to the airline’s technology stack.

“Rollout of SkyWORKS provides our teams with numerous schedule views to evaluate different business scenarios and offers us a central repository for all schedule-related information,” Lamar said.

She added that the system would help accelerate the airline’s growth across East Africa and markets farther afield.

Amadeus partnership enters a new phase

The deployment expands a relationship already covering several important airline functions. Integration between scheduling, passenger services and commercial systems can reduce fragmented information and improve coordination between departments.

Yassine Mellak, Vice President of Sales and Account Management for the Middle East, Türkiye and Africa at Amadeus, said the partnership reflected a shared focus on innovation and operational excellence.

“We have collaborated on Altéa, revenue and loyalty management, and now we are deepening the relationship with the implementation of Amadeus SkyWORKS,” Mellak said.

He added that the solution would deliver greater flexibility and control through a technology platform designed to improve usability.

For a growing airline, this integration can support quicker reporting and stronger network oversight. Commercial and operational teams can work from consistent schedule information rather than relying on disconnected planning processes.

Tourism connectivity could benefit

Uganda Airlines launched commercial operations in 2019 and has steadily expanded its presence from its Entebbe base. Its network supports travel across East Africa while creating connections to important international markets.

The carrier plays a strategic role in Uganda’s visitor economy. Air access is essential for international travellers heading to the country’s national parks, wildlife reserves, Lake Victoria experiences and cultural attractions.

Better schedule planning can make these journeys easier to organise. Convenient arrival times and coordinated onward services may improve access for visitors combining Uganda with neighbouring destinations.

The benefits can extend to tour operators, hotels and meetings organisers. Predictable services allow tourism businesses to build itineraries, transfers and accommodation packages with greater confidence.

Regional connectivity also supports multi-country African travel. Visitors increasingly combine wildlife, cultural and urban experiences across several destinations during one journey.

Interline cooperation broadens travel choices

Uganda Airlines is also strengthening international access through strategic commercial relationships. Its interline agreement with Air India expands itinerary possibilities for passengers travelling between Africa and the Indian market.

Such cooperation can allow travellers to book more connected journeys across participating networks. It may also support demand from business travellers, tourists, students and people visiting friends and relatives.

Technology becomes increasingly important as these partnerships expand. Schedule information must remain accurate across sales systems to protect connections and provide clear options to passengers.

SkyWORKS can support this process by strengthening how Uganda Airlines manages and distributes its flight schedule.

African aviation embraces digital growth

The launch represents an important technology milestone for African aviation. Airlines across the continent face complex planning conditions, including seasonal demand, infrastructure limitations and rapidly developing international markets.

Digital scheduling tools cannot remove every operational challenge. However, they can give planners clearer information and more time to evaluate alternatives.

Uganda Airlines’ position as Africa’s first SkyWORKS customer could also encourage wider adoption as carriers seek greater efficiency and network flexibility.

For Uganda, the investment strengthens the relationship between aviation technology and tourism growth. Improved planning can support more useful flight timings, stronger connections and sustainable network expansion.

As Uganda Airlines pursues growth across East Africa and international markets, Amadeus SkyWORKS will provide a central platform for developing its schedule. The historic implementation positions the airline at the forefront of a new phase in African aviation technology.
