United Airlines Adds 30-Plus College Football Flights and 4,400 Seats for 2026 Fans

United Airlines is expanding its 2026 college football travel programme with more than 30 additional nonstop flights and over 4,400 extra seats serving some of the season’s biggest games.

The special schedule will connect fans with leading football destinations including Austin, Baton Rouge, Columbus, South Bend, Knoxville, Lincoln and State College. Flights are timed around major weekend fixtures, giving supporters more direct alternatives to connecting journeys.

United will combine specially scheduled flights with larger aircraft on selected services where demand is expected to rise. Most outbound journeys will operate shortly before each game, while return flights will depart after the weekend.

The programme strengthens the relationship between aviation and sports tourism. Major college football games attract thousands of travelling supporters who generate demand for hotels, restaurants, transportation, entertainment and other visitor services.

United’s schedule focuses on important rivalries and high-profile contests involving teams from the Southeastern Conference, Big Ten and other leading programmes.

Texas Fans Gain Major Nonstop Options

Texas is central to the airline’s football expansion.

For the Texas Longhorns’ game at LSU on November 14, United will operate a nonstop flight from Austin to Baton Rouge on November 13. The return service will leave Baton Rouge for Austin on November 15.

The schedule gives Longhorns supporters direct access to Louisiana’s capital without requiring a connection through a major airline hub.

Another special service will support the Ohio State game at Texas on September 12. United plans to fly from Columbus to Austin on September 11, followed by a return journey from Austin to Columbus on September 13.

The two flights will connect major Big Ten and Southeastern Conference markets during a weekend expected to attract substantial visitor demand in Austin.

Houston-area fans will also gain a direct option for the Rice game at Notre Dame on September 12. United will operate from Houston Intercontinental Airport to South Bend on September 11, returning on September 13.

These services could support short sports holidays by allowing passengers to leave shortly before the game and return after the weekend.

South Bend Receives Expanded Football Connectivity

South Bend will be one of the largest beneficiaries of United’s seasonal programme because of continuing demand for Notre Dame home games.

Additional services from Newark and San Francisco will support selected fixtures during the 2026 season. The programme includes travel opportunities linked to games involving Stanford, Miami, Boston College and SMU.

Direct services into South Bend can reduce the need for fans to fly through Chicago before completing the remaining journey by road or regional transportation.

This convenience could also increase visitor spending across South Bend’s accommodation, dining and retail sectors. Game weekends frequently create high occupancy for hotels and substantial demand for local transportation.

United’s wider schedule will additionally connect Newark with Green Bay for the Notre Dame game in Wisconsin, further supporting fans travelling to major neutral or away fixtures.

SEC and Big Ten Markets Gain Flights

United is also targeting high-demand games involving Alabama, LSU, Tennessee, Oregon, Ohio State, Wisconsin, Penn State, Indiana and Nebraska.

For Alabama’s game at LSU on November 7, special flights will connect Birmingham and Baton Rouge around the weekend.

The Alabama game at Tennessee on October 17 will receive services between Birmingham and Knoxville. These flights will provide supporters with a direct alternative to a long road journey.

Big Ten demand will be supported by flights between Eugene and Columbus for Oregon’s game at Ohio State on November 7.

United will also connect Madison with State College for Wisconsin’s September 26 meeting with Penn State. Indianapolis and Lincoln will receive dedicated service for the Indiana-Nebraska game on October 10.

These temporary city pairs demonstrate how airlines can use event-based schedules to serve demand that may not support permanent year-round routes.

Starlink Enhances Connected Fan Journeys

United is expanding Starlink across its mainline and United Express fleets, offering high-speed internet free to MileagePlus members on equipped aircraft.

The technology can allow passengers to stream content, follow scores, communicate with other supporters and use multiple connected devices during their journey. However, Starlink availability will depend on the aircraft assigned to each flight, and customers are notified when their service is scheduled to use an equipped plane.

By June 2026, United reported that more than 400 aircraft had Starlink installed, with close to 1,000 expected to receive the system before the end of the year.

The service supports changing traveller expectations, particularly among sports fans who want live information during busy game weekends.

Special Flights Strengthen Sports Tourism

The additional flights are designed as limited seasonal services rather than permanent routes.

Fans can book through United’s website or mobile application, while eligible customers may redeem MileagePlus miles. Schedules and aircraft remain subject to operational changes, making it important for passengers to review their bookings before departure.

United’s expansion highlights the growing economic importance of college football travel. Direct air services can increase accessibility, encourage overnight visits and bring additional tourism spending into university destinations.

By adding more than 30 flights, deploying larger aircraft and offering over 4,400 additional seats, United is building a specialised network around one of America’s largest sporting seasons.

The programme will give supporters more opportunities to follow their teams while helping host cities benefit from the powerful combination of aviation, live sport and weekend tourism.
