Asia Luxury Hotel Expansion Accelerates

China, India and Saudi Arabia have advanced three major luxury hospitality developments, adding new urban, nature-based and wellness-led tourism opportunities across Asia.

Financial City Chengdu – MGallery Collection opened on August 27, 2026, with 155 rooms and suites. Taj Mount Kusur Resort and Villas was announced for Lonavala on August 26, while Equinox Resort AMAALA opened on September 3.

The developments represent three different premium hospitality models. Chengdu has gained an operating city hotel, while Saudi Arabia has introduced a coastal wellness resort. India’s Lonavala project will combine a 100-room resort with 32 branded villas, although no opening date has been confirmed.

Together, the projects demonstrate how luxury hotels are moving beyond conventional accommodation. Dining, meetings, privately owned residences, recreation and wellness now play increasingly important roles in the guest experience.

No related changes to visa rules, passport requirements, flights, railways or border procedures accompanied the announcements. Travellers must continue following existing entry and transport arrangements.

Chengdu gains new urban hotel

Financial City Chengdu – MGallery Collection is already welcoming guests in Sichuan Province. The property adds premium accommodation and event capacity within one of western China’s most important commercial and cultural centres.

The hotel features 155 rooms and suites, restaurants, a fitness centre and approximately 480 square metres of adaptable event space. Meeting facilities can support corporate gatherings, banquets and private functions.

A seventh-floor Sky Garden provides an additional leisure and social space. Its design draws inspiration from Chengdu’s history and natural character, including the city’s association with lychee orchards and Tang dynasty poetry.

The hotel can serve several travel markets. Business visitors gain accommodation near Chengdu’s financial district, while leisure guests can use the property as a base for exploring the city’s cuisine, heritage and attractions.

It is the third MGallery hotel operating in the Chengdu metropolitan area and the collection’s tenth property in China. Further expansion is planned as MGallery works toward doubling its Greater China portfolio by 2030.

However, the hotel’s wider economic influence cannot yet be measured. Occupancy, average stays, employment and guest-spending figures have not been published for the new property.

Lonavala prepares resort and villas

India’s Taj Mount Kusur Resort and Villas represents a different model. Planned across 34 acres in the Western Ghats, the project will combine hotel accommodation, private residences, wellness and outdoor recreation.

The development will include a 100-room Taj resort and 32 branded villas. Its proposed facilities include nature trails, Zen gardens, stargazing decks, sports courts, dining venues and banquet areas.

A two-acre Wabi-Sabi Central Park will form the landscaped heart of the property. The wider concept also includes a Miyawaki forest, golf putting greens and a dedicated fitness lawn.

The branded villas will connect with the resort’s accommodation inventory through a lease-back programme. Owners will receive access to Taj hospitality services, including concierge support, housekeeping and maintenance.

The project could broaden Lonavala’s appeal for family holidays, wellness escapes, celebrations and longer leisure stays. Its location between major Maharashtra urban markets may also support short breaks and group travel.

However, travellers cannot book the development as an operating resort yet. No confirmed completion or guest-opening date has been announced, making its tourism contribution a future prospect.

AMAALA opens wellness resort

Equinox Resort AMAALA has opened at Marina Village in Triple Bay, adding another premium accommodation option to Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea coast.

The resort has 128 rooms and suites across six categories, including two penthouses. It also features 21 branded residences, connecting private ownership with professionally managed hospitality.

Wellness and physical performance sit at the centre of the property. Guests have access to 704 square metres of indoor and outdoor training space and a 1,602-square-metre spa.

Facilities include cryotherapy, an infrared sauna, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, hydrotherapy and contrast-temperature experiences. Four outdoor pools include a lap pool and a rooftop magnesium salt pool overlooking Triple Bay.

Guestrooms incorporate features designed around recovery and rest, including circadian lighting, acoustic isolation and precision climate controls. Dining concepts focus on nutrition while maintaining a luxury resort experience.

The resort becomes Equinox’s second hotel globally and its first outside the United States. It also supports AMAALA’s wider positioning around wellness, sport, culture and coastal recreation.

Saudi tourism capacity continues rising

Equinox Resort AMAALA enters a rapidly expanding national hospitality market. Saudi Arabia recorded 5,937 licensed tourism accommodation establishments during the fourth quarter of 2025, rising 34.2% annually.

Hotels accounted for 2,847 properties, while serviced apartments and other establishments totalled 3,090. Hotel occupancy reached 57.3%, compared with 56% during the same quarter one year earlier.

The average hotel stay increased from 3.6 to 3.8 nights. Tourism employment also reached more than one million people, highlighting the sector’s growing contribution to the national economy.

These figures provide market context but do not measure Equinox Resort AMAALA’s individual performance. Property-level booking and spending data will be needed to assess its direct impact.

Luxury hospitality becomes experience-led

The three developments reveal how premium hospitality is becoming more specialised across Asia. Chengdu combines business travel with city leisure, while Lonavala focuses on nature and private villas. AMAALA centres its experience on performance, recovery and coastal wellness.

Their immediate impact differs because only the Chengdu and AMAALA hotels are operating. Taj Mount Kusur remains a planned development.

Nevertheless, all three show accommodation becoming central to wider destination experiences. Future success will depend on measurable demand, responsible operations and strong connections with local tourism economies.
