HBX Group and Bioscore Simplify Sustainability Certification for Hotels

HBX Group has partnered with Bioscore to help hotel partners pursue sustainability certification, giving uncertified properties clearer access to specialist guidance. The collaboration focuses on organising environmental, social and governance information and preparing evidence for independent assessment.

The initiative forms part of the HBX Group Sustainable Certified Hotels Programme. It aims to make the certification process more accessible, particularly for operators with limited internal sustainability resources.

For travellers, the intended benefit is clearer information when comparing accommodation. For hotels, the partnership addresses the practical work required to substantiate sustainability claims.

Participation will remain voluntary across HBX Group’s global hotel partner network.

Specialist Guidance Targets Uncertified Properties

Bioscore will help interested hotels understand the requirements of the BIOSCORE sustainability scheme.

Its support will cover organising relevant data and documentary evidence before evaluation by independent certification bodies.

That preparation can matter for properties already undertaking sustainability measures but struggling to present their activities against formal assessment requirements.

Smaller hotels may face particular difficulties when they lack dedicated ESG personnel. Specialist guidance could help them understand what information they need and how to assemble it.

However, access to support does not guarantee certification. Each participating property must still undergo the applicable independent evaluation.

The distinction separates preparation assistance from the decision on whether a hotel meets the scheme’s requirements.

Independent Evaluation Remains Central

HBX Group describes the agreement as its first collaboration with a sustainability certification scheme owner.

Elena Pérez, the group’s Chief HR, Comms & ESG Officer, highlighted growing expectations for credible and transparent sustainability progress.

She also identified the complexity of the certification journey as a challenge for hotel operators.

The partnership responds by providing a clearer route to expert assistance throughout preparation.

Bioscore CEO Víctor Monzón similarly emphasised the need for hotels to substantiate the messages they communicate.

For hospitality businesses, that means connecting public statements with evidence that assessors can examine. Certification preparation therefore involves more than developing promotional descriptions of environmental initiatives.

European Rules Raise Communication Standards

The collaboration arrives as European consumer protection rules place greater scrutiny on environmental claims and sustainability labels.

The Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition rules became applicable from 27 September 2026.

They address unsupported generic environmental claims and sustainability labels lacking an appropriate certification scheme or public-authority basis.

This strengthens the importance of accurate wording and credible evidence in consumer-facing communications. However, certification should not be interpreted as automatic approval for every environmental statement a hotel makes. Consilium

For hotel marketing teams, the practical issue is ensuring that each claim reflects what the property can demonstrate.

Travellers Could Gain Clearer Accommodation Choices

HBX Group’s programme identifies and promotes recognised sustainability certifications across its hotel portfolio.

The Bioscore collaboration aims to expand that certified accommodation offering by supporting properties that have not yet completed certification.

Greater visibility could help travel advisors and customers identify hotels with independently assessed sustainability credentials.

However, travellers still need to understand what an individual certification covers. A label’s value depends on its requirements and the evidence behind it.

The initiative’s intended contribution is therefore stronger transparency during accommodation selection.

It does not establish that every participating hotel has already improved its environmental performance or secured certification.

Established Frameworks Guide Programme Recognition

HBX Group will continue recognising sustainability certifications aligned with established international standards and frameworks.

The company identifies the Global Sustainable Tourism Council and Travalyst among the frameworks informing its approach.

These connections form part of its wider effort to make certified properties more visible within accommodation distribution.

For hotels, recognition can help communicate independently assessed credentials to travel partners.

Nevertheless, the announcement provides no quantified forecast for additional bookings, occupancy or revenue.

Any commercial benefit will depend on certification outcomes, customer preferences and how effectively properties communicate their verified attributes.

Global Distribution Extends the Initiative’s Reach

HBX Group serves partners in more than 170 countries and employs over 3,500 people worldwide.

Its businesses include Hotelbeds, Bedsonline+, The Luxurist, Roiback, Civitfun and PerfectStay.

The group connects hotels and other suppliers with travel advisors, tour operators, airlines, loyalty programmes and online marketplaces.

That distribution role gives the certification initiative potential relevance across multiple booking channels.

It also makes consistency important. Sustainability information needs to remain clear as it moves between accommodation providers, distribution partners and customers.

Preparation Will Determine Practical Progress

The partnership’s immediate focus is helping hotels understand requirements and prepare evidence for independent review.

For smaller operators, that support could reduce uncertainty around a process requiring specialist knowledge and organised documentation.

For travellers, meaningful progress will depend on whether more properties complete credible assessments and communicate their results accurately.

The collaboration provides a route towards that goal, while certification decisions remain independent and hotel participation remains voluntary.
