IHG Hotels & Resorts plans to enter Yogyakarta with a 180-room Hotel Indigo, following an agreement with PT Raka Eka Makmur. Expected to open in 2029, the property will expand accommodation choices in one of Indonesia’s prominent cultural destinations.
The signing will introduce IHG’s first hotel in Yogyakarta and strengthen its Indonesian Luxury & Lifestyle portfolio. Planned facilities include dining venues, leisure amenities and approximately 740 square metres of meeting and event space.
For travellers, the hotel will provide another base for exploring Yogyakarta’s arts, food and heritage. Its development also extends Hotel Indigo’s expansion beyond the Indonesian destinations where the brand already operates.
Cultural Identity Will Shape the Guest Experience
Hotel Indigo Yogyakarta will draw on the city’s cultural character and creative traditions through its design and guest experience.
The brand develops properties around their surrounding neighbourhoods. Local stories, design influences, traditions and food scenes help shape the atmosphere of each hotel.
In Yogyakarta, that approach will connect the planned property with a destination known for its artistic community and enduring heritage.
Chris Anklin, IHG’s Senior Director of Development for South East Asia and Korea, described Yogyakarta as a natural fit for Hotel Indigo.
He highlighted its local character and appeal among domestic and international travellers. The development reflects IHG’s interest in destinations where distinctive cultural stories can inform hospitality experiences.
New Facilities Target Leisure and Event Travellers
The planned 180-room property will combine accommodation with facilities serving leisure guests, business gatherings and social occasions.
An all-day dining restaurant will anchor its food offering. A rooftop bar and terrace will add another setting for dining and socialising.
Leisure amenities will include a swimming pool, fitness centre and spa. These facilities will give guests options for relaxation between destination activities.
Meanwhile, approximately 740 square metres of event facilities will include a ballroom and several meeting rooms.
That combination could help the hotel serve different travel purposes. However, the announcement does not provide room rates, booking dates or detailed event capacities.
The opening remains expected in 2029, with further operational details still to come.
Heritage Attractions Strengthen Destination Appeal
Yogyakarta provides a gateway for travellers exploring Borobudur and Prambanan, both UNESCO World Heritage sites.
IHG also highlighted Borobudur’s position among Indonesia’s five Super Priority Destinations. This connection places the proposed hotel within a wider cultural tourism setting.
Anklin identified air connectivity through Yogyakarta International Airport as another factor supporting the destination’s appeal.
For visitors, accommodation in Yogyakarta can form part of itineraries combining urban experiences with excursions to surrounding heritage attractions.
The proposed hotel’s neighbourhood-led approach aims to bring the city’s culture into the stay itself. Its wider appeal will also depend on how guests access and experience the destination.
Developer Partnership Focuses on Local Stories
The agreement marks the beginning of IHG’s partnership with PT Raka Eka Makmur.
Ronny Pallar, the developer’s President Director, highlighted Yogyakarta’s heritage, artistic traditions and creative community as foundations for the project.
He said the hotel would offer access to local arts, culinary experiences and culture. It would also serve as a base for exploring the region’s heritage landmarks.
For the hospitality sector, the partnership connects an international hotel brand with a developer seeking to express the destination’s identity.
The announcement outlines that ambition without identifying specific local suppliers, cultural partnerships or employment targets.
Those details will shape how the project’s neighbourhood concept translates into practical experiences for guests.
Hotel Indigo Expands Across Indonesia
Hotel Indigo currently operates three Indonesian properties in Bali Seminyak Beach, Bandung and Bintan.
Another six hotels are under development, including projects planned for Bali, Jakarta and Lombok.
The Yogyakarta signing adds another cultural destination to this expanding network. It also broadens the brand’s reach across Indonesia’s varied tourism markets.
For travellers familiar with Hotel Indigo, the expansion will create more opportunities to choose the brand across different Indonesian itineraries.
For IHG, Yogyakarta provides a new city presence within its broader national development strategy.
Wider IHG Pipeline Supports Continued Growth
IHG currently operates 35 hotels across Indonesia under nine brands, serving multiple accommodation segments and destinations.
The group also has 13 additional properties in its development pipeline.
Hotel Indigo Yogyakarta will contribute to that expansion while introducing a new hospitality option for the city’s future visitors.
Its planned combination of cultural design, leisure facilities and event space positions it to serve a varied guest base.
As development progresses towards 2029, the project’s significance will centre on delivering that destination-focused experience and establishing IHG’s first Yogyakarta presence.
