Hotel Indigo has reached a significant milestone in its international expansion, with 200 hotels now open across more than 30 countries. The achievement reflects growing demand for distinctive hospitality experiences that connect guests with the culture, history and character of their destinations. IHG Hotels & Resorts is now looking to build on this momentum, with another 134 properties in the development pipeline and plans to extend the brand into new markets and accommodation formats.
The growth marks a notable shift for a brand that began as an urban boutique hotel concept in the United States in 2004. After taking 15 years to reach its first 100 properties in 2019, Hotel Indigo has doubled that number in around seven years. Its next phase will place greater emphasis on leisure destinations, beach resorts and branded residences, while retaining the locally inspired identity that distinguishes the collection from more standardised hotel offerings.
From Urban Boutique Hotels to International Growth
Hotel Indigo was developed around the idea that a hotel should reflect the neighbourhood in which it operates. Individual properties draw inspiration from local architecture, heritage, food and design, creating experiences that vary from one destination to another.
The brand now ranks second by hotel count within IHG’s Luxury & Lifestyle portfolio, behind InterContinental. Its expansion also strengthens IHG’s position in a competitive hospitality segment where travellers increasingly seek character-led accommodation and experiences rooted in local culture.
Recent openings have broadened the brand’s geographic reach. In the Americas and Caribbean, Hotel Indigo has entered Peru with Hotel Indigo Lima Miraflores and expanded into the Cayman Islands and Turks and Caicos. The latter represents IHG’s first property in the archipelago. The brand has also added destinations in Mexico, including Tijuana and La Paz.
Europe remains an important part of the network, with new developments extending its presence across cities such as Bordeaux, Faro, Florence, Turin and Trieste. Several Italian projects have been developed in partnership with CHC, supporting the brand’s expansion in Southern Europe.
Asia continues to contribute significantly to the development pipeline. Hotel Indigo Bangkok Thonglor and Hotel Indigo Ningbo opened in 2026, while properties in Chongqing and Jingdezhen are expected to follow in the second half of the year. The signing of Hotel Indigo Phuket Nai Yang Beach also reflects the brand’s growing interest in resort destinations.
Resorts and Branded Residences Open New Opportunities
The move into leisure-led markets is central to the brand’s next growth phase. In June 2024, IHG formalised its strategy to expand Hotel Indigo into the resort segment, creating opportunities to reach travellers looking beyond conventional city breaks. Recent openings in Albufeira, Phuket, Grand Cayman and Turks and Caicos demonstrate how the brand is broadening its appeal. These destinations allow Hotel Indigo to combine its neighbourhood-inspired approach with beach experiences, relaxation and leisure-focused stays. A further development is the brand’s entry into branded residences. On August 18, 2026, IHG announced its first such project through The Residences at Hotel Indigo Mountain View Ras El Hekma on Egypt’s North Coast. The development will comprise 280 residences alongside a 100-room hotel, marking a new format for the brand globally. The project reflects an opportunity to extend hotel-brand recognition beyond traditional overnight accommodation. Branded residences can appeal to buyers seeking professionally managed properties associated with an established hospitality name, while giving hotel groups another avenue for growth.
The Middle East is also emerging as a key expansion market. Hotel Indigo Riyadh Al Olaya is expected to mark the brand’s Saudi Arabian debut in 2027. Additional signed projects include developments in Abha and Jeddah. The Jeddah project is scheduled to open in the first quarter of 2028, with 267 hotel rooms and 173 serviced apartments.
IHG Looks to Accelerate the Next Phase
Hotel Indigo’s expansion forms part of IHG’s broader investment in its luxury and lifestyle business. The group has strengthened this segment through acquisitions, including Six Senses, Regent and Kimpton, alongside the development of collections such as Vignette Collection. Market performance has also supported the focus on upscale hospitality. An analysis by Colliers of major listed hotel groups’ first-half 2026 results placed luxury and lifestyle brands among the strongest performers for revenue per available room (RevPAR) growth, with average daily rate increases playing a key role. IHG announced its ambition in June 2024 to double Hotel Indigo’s portfolio again over the following three to five years, with the second phase targeted to progress twice as quickly as the first. The current development pipeline of 134 properties provides a substantial base for that expansion, although the timing of individual projects will depend on development progress and market conditions.
A Wider Footprint, with Local Character at Its Core
Hotel Indigo’s next chapter will be shaped by its ability to grow internationally without losing the individuality that defines the brand. Reaching 200 open hotels demonstrates how far the concept has travelled since its launch, but the next milestone will depend on translating that identity into very different destinations, from major cities to beach resorts and residential developments.
For IHG, the opportunity is not simply to add more hotels to its portfolio. It is to create a broader network of properties that gives guests more ways to experience a destination while offering owners new avenues for investment. With 134 projects in the pipeline and expansion planned across several regions, Hotel Indigo is positioning itself for another period of growth in the global lifestyle hospitality market.
