Melbourne will add more than 400 weekly train services from Sunday, August 23, 2026, delivering more frequent journeys and stronger connections across metropolitan and regional rail corridors.

The expanded timetable will benefit passengers using the Werribee, Laverton, Williamstown, Sandringham, Craigieburn and Upfield lines. Additional services will also support travelers on the Belgrave, Lilydale, Mernda, Hurstbridge, Wyndham Vale, Geelong, Shepparton and Seymour corridors.

The Victorian Government said the service increase is possible because the Metro Tunnel has created additional capacity across Melbourne’s railway network.

For visitors, the expanded timetable will offer more flexibility when traveling between the city centre, suburban accommodation, entertainment districts, sporting venues and bayside destinations.

New Cross-City Service Connects West and Bayside

One of the most significant changes will be the introduction of direct trains between Newport and Sandringham through Flinders Street.

For the first time, passengers will be able to travel between Melbourne’s western and bayside suburbs without changing trains in the central city.

The Werribee, Laverton, Williamstown and Sandringham lines will receive more than 180 additional weekly services. Trains are expected to operate every 10 minutes between Newport and Sandringham on weekdays.

The direct connection will improve access to several popular visitor areas. Travelers from Melbourne’s west will gain easier journeys toward bayside neighborhoods, while passengers from the Sandringham corridor will receive more convenient access to western suburbs.

The route will also support journeys to major destinations near central Melbourne, including sporting venues, shopping areas, restaurants and cultural attractions.

Craigieburn and Upfield Gain Frequent Services

The Craigieburn Line will receive 115 additional weekly services.

Trains will operate every 20 minutes or better from morning until midnight, seven days a week. This will provide passengers with more consistent service options outside traditional weekday peak periods.

The Upfield Line will receive another 77 weekly services, with trains also operating every 20 minutes or better throughout the day and evening.

These improvements are expected to benefit residents, airport-area workers, students and visitors staying in Melbourne’s northern suburbs.

Wyndham Vale Receives Higher-Capacity Trains

The Seymour Line will move to hourly trains on Saturdays and Sundays, strengthening connections between Melbourne and communities north of the city.

Shepparton will gain nine return services every weekday and five return services on Saturdays and Sundays following improvements to the regional line.
