The United Arab Emirates is preparing to enter a new era of national mobility as introductory passenger rail operations begin between Abu Dhabi and Fujairah on June 30, 2026.
The first service will reduce the journey between the two emirates to approximately one hour and 45 minutes, creating a faster and more predictable alternative to road travel. The launch will mark a major milestone for residents, business travellers and international visitors moving between the UAE’s capital and its eastern coastline.
The initial Abu Dhabi–Fujairah operation will precede the official launch of the wider passenger rail network on September 30, 2026. That phase will include the opening of stations in Dubai and Al Dhaid, significantly extending the system’s reach across major population and economic centres.
Further expansion is scheduled for December 30, 2026, when stations in the Al Dhafra region are expected to begin operations. The initial rollout will conclude on March 30, 2027, with the opening of Sharjah station.
Together, the planned stages will establish the foundation of a national intercity railway designed to improve connectivity, reduce highway pressure and support long-term economic and tourism growth.
Abu Dhabi–Fujairah Route Opens First
The introductory route will provide a direct connection between Mohamed bin Zayed City in Abu Dhabi and Fujairah, giving passengers a comfortable option for travelling between western and eastern areas of the country.
Fujairah is an important tourism destination known for its beaches, mountains, diving locations and Indian Ocean coastline. Faster access from Abu Dhabi could support weekend tourism, hotel demand and short domestic holidays while improving movement for workers, families and business travellers.
For visitors, the railway will make it easier to combine Abu Dhabi’s museums, cultural attractions and entertainment districts with Fujairah’s coastal and nature-based experiences within one itinerary.
The service is also expected to improve access between tourism destinations and residential communities that have traditionally depended heavily on private cars.
Modern Fleet Supports High-Speed Travel
A fleet of 13 passenger trains will operate across the network. Each train will accommodate up to 400 passengers and will be capable of reaching speeds of 200 kilometres per hour.
The fleet has been designed to meet international standards for safety, comfort and efficiency while operating in the UAE’s demanding climatic conditions.
Passenger services will include Comfort and Premium travel classes, allowing the railway to serve different budgets and journey requirements.
Fares on the Abu Dhabi–Fujairah route will begin at AED55 for Comfort Class and AED120 for Premium Class. Tickets are scheduled to become available through the Etihad Rail mobile application and official digital booking channels from June 23, 2026.
The accessible pricing structure could encourage regular use by residents while also positioning rail as an attractive option for tourists seeking reliable inter-emirate transport.
Stations Designed as Integrated Travel Hubs
The newly inaugurated Mohamed bin Zayed City Passenger Train Station represents the first major gateway in the passenger network.
The facility has been designed to handle significant passenger volumes while incorporating digital technology, smart mobility services and efficient circulation systems. Future upgrades are expected to increase capacity and introduce additional passenger solutions as demand develops.
Stations across the network will feature cafés, restaurants, retail outlets and international brands, expanding their role beyond conventional transport terminals.
Onboard dining will also form part of the passenger experience, supporting the UAE’s wider ambition to combine mobility with high hospitality standards.
Integration with buses, taxis and urban transport networks will be essential to the system’s success. Authorities intend to build a seamless travel ecosystem that enables passengers to transfer efficiently between rail services and their final destinations.
Tourism and Business Connectivity Set to Improve
The passenger railway is expected to deliver significant benefits for the UAE’s tourism economy.
Direct rail connections between cities can encourage visitors to explore more than one emirate during a single trip. Dubai passengers could eventually travel more conveniently to Sharjah, Al Dhaid, Abu Dhabi, Al Dhafra and Fujairah, creating new opportunities for hotels, attractions, restaurants and tour operators.
The network will also support access to commercial districts, industrial areas and emerging development zones. Faster journeys may improve business productivity while opening employment and investment opportunities across a wider geographic area.
Passenger operations will be managed by Etihad Rail Passenger Services, a joint venture between Etihad Rail and international public transport operator Keolis. The partnership combines national railway expertise with international operational experience.

The passenger network forms a central part of the wider UAE Railway Programme, which combines freight services, passenger transport and integrated mobility solutions.
Rail travel can move large numbers of people more efficiently than private vehicles, helping reduce congestion and transportation-related emissions.
