Qatar is strengthening its appeal to Indian travellers by joining a growing international network accepting India’s Unified Payments Interface at participating merchants.
UPI acceptance in Qatar began with Qatar Duty Free at Hamad International Airport before extending through supported payment terminals. The development gives eligible Indian visitors a familiar QR-based method for purchases during overseas journeys.
The Gulf state joins destinations including the United Arab Emirates, France, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka and Mauritius in building UPI-related payment links with India. Singapore also has a direct connection between UPI and its PayNow system for cross-border transfers.
Cambodia has expanded the network further through compatibility between participating Indian UPI applications and its KHQR payment system.
Together, these developments show how digital payments are becoming part of the international visitor experience. Convenient transactions can reduce friction, support tourist spending and help local businesses serve India’s expanding outbound travel market.
Qatar improves payment convenience
Qatar’s UPI acceptance creates practical benefits for Indian visitors arriving for holidays, business trips, events or family travel.
Participating merchants can receive payments through compatible point-of-sale systems. Travellers scan a supported QR code using an eligible UPI application, review the transaction and approve it through their usual payment process.
This familiarity may be particularly helpful for first-time international travellers who regularly use UPI in India. It can reduce the need to exchange large amounts of cash or depend entirely on an international bank card.
Qatar has developed a diverse visitor economy around Doha’s museums, waterfront districts, shopping centres, restaurants and luxury hotels. A smoother payment environment can complement these investments by making daily purchases easier.
However, acceptance is not universal. Travellers should carry another payment method because individual merchants or terminals may not support international UPI transactions.
UAE builds a wider merchant network
The UAE was an early Gulf market for UPI acceptance and remains one of the most important destinations for Indian outbound travel.
Supported payments are available through participating merchant networks, including selected retail locations and major supermarket outlets. Indian visitors can use compatible applications to scan enabled QR codes, with their linked accounts charged in rupees.
Dubai and Abu Dhabi benefit from short flight times, extensive air connectivity and a broad tourism offering. Shopping, family attractions, luxury hospitality, business events and stopover travel all support strong demand from India.
UPI adds another layer of convenience to this established relationship. Visitors familiar with mobile payments at home can use a similar process for eligible purchases abroad.
Clear exchange-rate information and transparent transaction confirmation remain important. Travellers should check the displayed amount carefully before approving any overseas payment.
Asian connections broaden tourism access
UPI’s international growth is also supporting travel across South and Southeast Asia.
Nepal and Bhutan attract Indian visitors through their proximity, cultural connections, mountain landscapes and spiritual attractions. Digital payment acceptance can assist travellers while also helping hotels, restaurants, shops and smaller tourism businesses receive cashless transactions.
Sri Lanka offers beaches, wildlife, heritage and short-haul holiday opportunities. Mauritius combines luxury resorts, marine experiences and strong cultural ties with India. Both destinations have introduced UPI services to make payments more convenient for visiting Indians.
Cambodia’s integration allows participating Indian travellers to scan compatible KHQR codes. This can support spending around cultural destinations, hospitality businesses and local retailers.
These systems may be especially valuable to smaller operators. Accepting familiar digital payments can help them reach customers who might otherwise limit purchases because of cash or card concerns.
France marks a European milestone
France represented a significant step in UPI’s expansion into Europe.
UPI payment acceptance was introduced at the Eiffel Tower for eligible online ticket purchases. The milestone demonstrated how Indian payment technology could support travellers at one of Europe’s most visited attractions.
For Indian tourists, digital access can simplify advance planning and reduce dependence on unfamiliar payment interfaces. It can also give attractions and tourism businesses another way to connect with a fast-growing visitor market.
Availability elsewhere in France remains dependent on participating merchants and payment providers. Visitors should not assume that every restaurant, hotel or attraction accepts UPI.
Digital links serve different purposes
International UPI arrangements do not all offer identical services.
Some countries provide merchant payments, allowing visitors to scan supported QR codes. Others connect national payment systems for person-to-person transfers or remittances. Certain agreements focus on building UPI-inspired domestic infrastructure rather than accepting Indian UPI applications directly.
Travellers must therefore check the precise service available at their destination. An announced partnership may also require a phased rollout before widespread merchant acceptance begins.
UPI does not eliminate the need for local currency, cards or emergency funds. Mobile connectivity, application eligibility and bank support can affect whether a transaction succeeds.
Payment access becomes a tourism advantage
Destinations increasingly compete on convenience as well as attractions, hotels and aviation links.
Simple payments can give travellers greater confidence, particularly when buying meals, tickets, transport or retail products. They may also encourage additional spending by removing uncertainty around cash and card usage.
For tourism businesses, UPI payments for Indian travellers provide access to a large, digitally experienced customer base. For India, the expansion extends one of its most successful financial technologies into international travel.
Qatar and the UAE demonstrate how payment connectivity can strengthen tourism relationships. As acceptance expands carefully across more markets, UPI could become an increasingly familiar companion for Indian travellers abroad.
