United Airlines has introduced its Elevated Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner on the Houston–Tokyo Narita route, bringing 99 premium seats and redesigned interiors. The deployment began with the Houston departure on October 24, 2026, followed by the Tokyo departure scheduled for October 25.
The aircraft connects George Bush Intercontinental Airport with Tokyo Narita International Airport. United operates the outbound Houston service as UA7 and the return flight as UA6.
For international travellers, the upgrade adds larger business-class suites, refreshed premium economy seating and improved entertainment throughout the aircraft. The changes expand comfort choices on a connection serving leisure holidays, corporate travel and onward journeys through Houston.
Nearly Half the Aircraft Offers Premium Seating
The Elevated Dreamliner accommodates 222 passengers, compared with 257 seats in United’s earlier Boeing 787-9 configuration.
Its layout includes 64 Polaris business-class seats, 35 Premium Plus seats and 123 economy seats. Together, business class and premium economy account for approximately 45% of capacity.
Within Polaris, passengers can choose between eight Polaris Studio suites and 56 standard suites. Economy accommodation includes 33 Economy Plus seats and 90 standard Economy seats.
This configuration gives travellers more opportunities to purchase additional space. However, the aircraft carries fewer passengers overall, making the deployment a cabin upgrade rather than an increase in total seating capacity.
Polaris Studio Adds Space for Long Journeys
The eight Polaris Studio suites form the centrepiece of United’s redesigned interior. Each provides approximately 25% more space than a standard Polaris seat.
Passengers receive a fully flat bed, direct aisle access and a 27-inch 4K OLED entertainment screen. Bluetooth connectivity and wireless charging add convenience during the trans-Pacific journey.
Six Studio suites also include companion ottomans, allowing eligible travelling companions to sit together during permitted portions of the flight.
Upgraded bedding, luxury skincare amenities and exclusive dining options further distinguish the Studio experience. These additions target passengers seeking greater personal space and more extensive onboard hospitality.
Standard Polaris suites also feature fully flat seating and direct aisle access, alongside 19-inch entertainment screens.
Privacy doors form part of the cabin design. However, travellers should confirm their availability, as United previously advised that door operation was temporarily unavailable.
Premium Plus Offers Another Comfort Option
United’s 35-seat Premium Plus cabin provides a separate premium economy option for passengers seeking additional comfort below business-class pricing.
The redesigned seats include privacy dividers, individual reading lights and wireless charging. A 16-inch 4K OLED entertainment screen gives each passenger a larger display than economy accommodation.
For leisure travellers, this cabin provides another choice when balancing journey comfort against holiday spending. Business travellers can also compare its features with company travel budgets and booking policies.
The additional premium economy capacity broadens the range of seating available. However, individual fares and seat availability will vary by departure.
Economy Receives Entertainment Improvements
United has extended the interior refresh beyond its premium cabins. Economy passengers receive updated seating and 13-inch 4K OLED entertainment screens.
Bluetooth connectivity allows travellers to connect compatible personal headphones to the entertainment system. Meanwhile, Economy Plus offers additional legroom within the economy cabin.
These changes give passengers access to newer entertainment technology across different fare categories. However, Economy Plus remains distinct from Premium Plus, which provides a separate cabin experience.
Families and groups should review the seat map carefully when choosing accommodation. Seat location, available adjacent seats and the cost of additional legroom can influence the overall booking decision.
Tourism Connections Extend Beyond Tokyo and Houston
The nonstop service supports travel between Japan and Texas while providing access to onward United connections through Houston.
For US holidaymakers, Tokyo Narita offers an arrival point for Japanese itineraries. Travellers departing Japan can combine Houston stays with onward journeys across the airline’s American network.
The cabin investment may appeal to visitors planning longer holidays or combining business trips with leisure stays. However, the aircraft change alone does not establish higher visitor demand or additional tourism spending.
Its immediate benefit lies in a wider selection of onboard experiences on an existing international connection.
Travellers Should Check the Exact Configuration
United operates different Boeing 787-9 layouts, so the aircraft type alone does not guarantee Elevated interiors.
Passengers should inspect their flight’s seat map and look for the 222-seat configuration and Polaris Studio accommodation before purchasing. Aircraft substitutions can subsequently change seating arrangements.
Travellers should also compare baggage allowances, seat charges, change conditions and refund restrictions. No fixed promotional fare accompanies the deployment details provided.
United’s wider Elevated expansion includes services from San Francisco to Singapore, London, Zurich and Seoul. The Tokyo–Houston introduction extends that investment to another important trans-Pacific journey.
