IndiGo has issued an urgent travel advisory for passengers flying through Delhi NCR after heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and hailstorm activity disrupted flight operations across the region. The airline warned travellers of possible delays, extended waiting times, and operational disruptions as severe weather conditions affected airport activity in India’s busiest aviation hub.
The advisory comes as the India Meteorological Department issued an orange alert for multiple parts of Delhi, forecasting thunderstorms, gusty winds, hail, and moderate rainfall late into the night. The changing weather conditions have added pressure on flight schedules, ground handling operations, and passenger movement at Indira Gandhi International Airport, one of Asia’s largest air travel gateways.
In an official statement shared on social media, IndiGo acknowledged that adverse weather conditions in Delhi were affecting flight operations and could lead to delays both on the ground and onboard aircraft.
The airline assured passengers that crew members and airport ground teams were actively assisting travellers to minimise inconvenience and maintain comfort during delays.
Delhi Weather Disrupts Airport Operations
Delhi witnessed partly cloudy skies, isolated showers, lightning activity, and hailstorm conditions during the day, creating operational challenges for airlines and airport authorities.
According to weather officials, strong winds ranging from 40 to 50 kmph, with gusts reaching up to 60 kmph, affected several areas across the capital. The warning covered Central Delhi, East Delhi, North West Delhi, South Delhi, South West Delhi, and other major districts within the NCR region.
Such weather conditions can significantly impact aviation operations, particularly during aircraft take-offs, landings, baggage handling, and runway management.
Heavy rain and reduced visibility often force airlines to revise schedules, delay departures, or place arriving aircraft in holding patterns until conditions improve. Ground operations such as refuelling, cargo handling, and passenger boarding may also slow down during thunderstorm activity.
For passengers travelling through Delhi Airport, one of the busiest transit hubs for domestic and international tourism in India, weather-related disruptions can create cascading delays across multiple destinations nationwide and overseas.
Passengers Advised to Monitor Flight Status
IndiGo urged passengers to remain patient while teams worked to restore normal operations as quickly as possible. Travellers were encouraged to regularly check flight updates before heading to the airport due to the possibility of schedule changes.
During severe weather events, airlines often adjust aircraft rotations and crew assignments to prioritise passenger safety and maintain operational stability.
Airport authorities and airlines typically coordinate closely with air traffic control and meteorological agencies to manage flight sequencing during periods of reduced visibility and unstable atmospheric conditions.
For tourists and business travellers, sudden weather disruptions in Delhi can affect connecting flights to destinations across India, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.
The Delhi NCR region serves as a major gateway for international and domestic tourism, with millions of passengers passing through the airport every month.
IMD Issues Orange Alert Across Delhi NCR
The India Meteorological Department warned residents and travellers to remain cautious during thunderstorm activity and advised following all safety precautions issued by local authorities.
Weather monitoring stations across Delhi recorded light rainfall during the afternoon and evening hours. Safdarjung and Lodhi Road stations reported trace rainfall, while Palam received 0.1 mm of rain and the Ridge station recorded 0.2 mm.
Despite the unstable weather conditions, temperatures in most parts of Delhi remained slightly below seasonal averages during the day. Safdarjung recorded a maximum temperature of 39.2°C, while Palam registered 37.6°C.
However, overnight temperatures remained above normal in some locations, contributing to humid conditions across the city.
Air quality in Delhi remained within the “moderate” category despite the rainfall activity. According to pollution monitoring data, the Air Quality Index stood at 147 during the afternoon.
Tourism and Travel Sector Monitor Weather Impact
Weather disruptions during the summer travel season can significantly impact airline punctuality, airport operations, and tourism flows across India.
Delhi Airport functions as a key aviation hub connecting travellers to major tourism destinations including Goa, Jaipur, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Dubai, Singapore, Bangkok, and London. Delays in Delhi often affect aircraft schedules and passenger connections throughout the broader airline network.
Travel operators, airlines, and hospitality businesses are closely monitoring weather developments as unstable conditions continue across northern India.
The India Meteorological Department has forecast partly cloudy conditions for Delhi on Thursday, with temperatures expected to remain high despite intermittent weather activity.
Meteorologists also indicated that a fresh Western Disturbance is expected to impact northwest India beginning May 15, potentially bringing additional changes in weather patterns across the region.
Several upper-air cyclonic circulations over North Pakistan, West Rajasthan, and North Central Uttar Pradesh are currently influencing atmospheric conditions and contributing to ongoing weather instability.
Airlines Prioritise Passenger Safety Amid Weather Challenges
As severe weather events become increasingly common during seasonal transitions, airlines operating in India continue prioritising operational safety and passenger communication.
Carriers such as IndiGo regularly issue travel advisories during periods of thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, fog, or extreme heat to help passengers plan journeys more effectively.
For travellers, monitoring airline notifications, weather forecasts, and airport updates has become essential during peak travel seasons when unpredictable weather can quickly disrupt schedules.
While flight delays and longer waiting times remain possible during adverse weather conditions, airlines and airport authorities continue working to minimise disruption and maintain safe operations for millions of passengers travelling across India and international destinations.
