Marriott Opens 800th Asia-Pacific Property with Laos Debut at Luxury Resort

Marriott International has reached a significant milestone in its Asia-Pacific expansion, opening its 800th property in the region outside China while making its first entry into Laos. The landmark opening brings the hospitality group’s Laos hotel debut through La Résidence Phou Vao, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa, in Luang Prabang. The development highlights Marriott’s growing interest in destinations that combine cultural heritage, distinctive experiences and international tourism potential.

The opening strengthens Marriott’s Asia-Pacific hotel portfolio and introduces The Luxury Collection brand to one of Southeast Asia’s most culturally distinctive destinations. Located in Luang Prabang, a UNESCO World Heritage-listed town, the 36-suite resort is positioned as an upscale retreat for travellers seeking a blend of local traditions, refined hospitality and access to the region’s natural and cultural attractions.

A Hilltop Retreat in Luang Prabang

Set on Phou Vao Hill across approximately 1.2 hectares of tropical gardens, La Résidence Phou Vao offers views of the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers, the surrounding temples and the historic town. The resort is around two kilometres from Luang Prabang’s old town and is described as the only hilltop property within the UNESCO zone.

The property retains its distinctive architecture, landscaped gardens and hilltop swimming pool, while its interiors, dining experiences and guest rituals have been refreshed to reflect The Luxury Collection’s standards. The resort’s design brings together contemporary comfort and elements of Lao craftsmanship, creating an experience closely connected to its setting.

Local Flavours, Wellness and Cultural Experiences

The resort features 36 suites incorporating materials and details such as rosewood and handwoven textiles. Its culinary offering centres on La Brasserie de la Résidence, where contemporary French cuisine is complemented by Lao influences. Guests can also enjoy a bar, the brand’s Be Epicurean programme and a tasting menu inspired by the food culture of Luang Prabang.

Wellness is another key element of the guest experience. The Mekong Spa, located in an open-air garden pavilion, draws inspiration from traditional Lao healing practices. The property also features a 13-metre freshwater infinity pool overlooking the surrounding landscape.

Beyond the resort, visitors can explore some of the region’s best-known attractions, including the Pak Ou Caves and Kuang Si Waterfalls. Sunset cruises along the Mekong and opportunities to experience traditional ceremonies, including the Baci blessing ritual, add further cultural depth to a stay.

Marriott’s Regional Expansion Strategy

The opening represents a broader step in Marriott’s strategy to expand into destinations known for their cultural identity and distinctive visitor experiences. Rather than simply increasing its hotel count, the group is looking to strengthen its presence in markets where heritage, local craftsmanship and tourism appeal can shape a memorable stay.

Rajeev Menon, President of Asia Pacific excluding China at Marriott International, described Laos as an exciting new chapter for the company. Bruce Rohr, Vice President and Global Brand Leader of The Luxury Collection, also highlighted the resort’s strong connection with Luang Prabang’s heritage and character.

With its first property in Laos and its 800th across Asia Pacific excluding China, Marriott has reached an important point in its regional growth. For Luang Prabang, the opening brings another internationally recognised luxury hospitality brand to a destination celebrated for its architecture, traditions and natural beauty. The resort’s combination of Lao influences and global hospitality standards could also appeal to travellers looking for experiences that go beyond conventional luxury accommodation.
