Vail Resorts has revealed its planned 2026/27 winter opening dates across major North American mountain destinations, giving skiers and international winter travellers an early opportunity to organize seasonal holidays.
Keystone Resort in Colorado aims to open as soon as possible in October. Breckenridge is scheduled for November 6, followed by Vail Mountain on November 13.
A major wave of resort openings will follow on November 20. Whistler Blackcomb in British Columbia, Park City Mountain in Utah, Heavenly in California and Northstar California are all scheduled to welcome winter guests that day.
Beaver Creek and Crested Butte in Colorado plan to open on November 25. Kirkwood in California and Stevens Pass in Washington are scheduled for December 4. Vail Resorts has cautioned that opening dates remain dependent on weather and mountain conditions.
The calendar provides an important planning window for travellers targeting Colorado, Utah, California, Washington and British Columbia during the opening months of the North American ski season.
Keystone Targets Early October Start
Keystone could again become one of the earliest major ski resorts to begin operations in North America.
An October opening would give snow enthusiasts another option for early-season mountain travel before the traditional November and December holiday rush.
However, travellers should keep flexibility in accommodation and transport arrangements. Temperatures, snowfall and snowmaking conditions can influence the final opening date.
International visitors should also consider demand around Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year and other peak winter periods. Flights, mountain accommodation, rental equipment and lessons can become more competitive during popular travel windows.
Epic Pass Pricing Encourages Early Ski Holiday Planning
Vail Resorts is also encouraging travellers to secure their Epic Pass products before September 7, when the current lowest pricing period of the fall ends.
The standard Epic Pass starts at $1,119 for adults. Pricing begins at $889 for teenagers and young adults aged 13 to 30 and $569 for children aged five to 12.
The Epic Local Pass starts at $829 for adults, $659 for travellers aged 13 to 30 and $435 for children.
Shorter-stay visitors can select an Epic Day Pass covering between one and seven days. Prices currently begin between $47 and $99 per day, depending on the access option selected.
Vail Resorts says Epic Day Pass products can offer savings of up to 65% compared with purchasing lift tickets on the day of arrival.
The company has also introduced a 20% reduction on Epic Pass and Epic Local Pass pricing for eligible skiers and snowboarders aged 13 to 30.
Epic Friend Tickets Add Value for Group Trips
Group and family travel will remain an important part of the winter tourism strategy.
Eligible guests purchasing an Epic Pass or Epic Local Pass can receive five Epic Friend Tickets. These provide 50% savings on adult lift tickets and 25% savings on child lift ticket prices.
Epic Pass holders can also receive 20% savings on selected mountain dining, lodging, ski and ride school services, equipment rentals and other eligible experiences.
These benefits could appeal particularly to international visitors combining several mountain destinations during a longer North American winter holiday.
New Food, Lessons and Entertainment Arrive
The 2026/27 season will bring broader changes to the visitor experience under Vail Resorts’ Epic Experience strategy.
The company plans significant improvements to mountain dining, including upgraded versions of popular dishes at 15 destination resorts. It is also investing in technology and operational changes intended to reduce waiting times and expand seating capacity.
Private lessons at Vail Mountain and Beaver Creek will move to the new Epic Ascent experience. The programme includes concierge support, enhanced equipment rental services and assistance with elements such as dining and transportation arrangements.
Breckenridge will meanwhile enter its first winter under the “Kingdom of Breck” identity and welcome the Rockstar Energy Open snowboard competition.
Park City Mountain will host The Snow League’s snowboard and freeski halfpipe competition, while Vail Mountain plans additional venues and performers within its seasonal pop-up music programme.
Snowmaking Investment Supports Early-Season Reliability
Vail Resorts continues to strengthen snowmaking capabilities as weather variability remains a major factor in winter tourism.
The company says it has invested more than $100 million in snowmaking across its portfolio since 2015. These systems can support early-season preparation and help resorts maintain skiable terrain when natural snowfall varies.
Its wider EpicPromise sustainability programme also targets a zero net operating footprint by 2030.
With major destinations preparing for openings from October through December, the 2026/27 calendar gives travellers an early signal to begin planning ski holidays.
For destinations such as Vail, Breckenridge, Park City and Whistler, the announcement also starts the countdown toward another important winter tourism season supporting hotels, restaurants, equipment rentals, transport operators and mountain communities across North America.
